remove the rear seat ; if needed; crawl to the back of the hatch and release the hatch lock from inside using a blade screwdriver or, have a locksmith at the dealer make a new key by code using your vin number
I am a police officer for the city of kinston in north carolina. i just spent the last half hour trying to help a lady with the problem. I used the advise of salvagefirst and it worked like a charm!!! thanks so much. The only difference in my situation was i had to turn the white/clear pin in the hole towards the driver side.
you should be able to access the trunk through the rear seat. check your owner's manual. once inside the trunk, there should be a trunk latch release on this new of a vehicle.
There are very specific battery jumping procedures in the cars smaller maintenance book as opposed to the larger owners manual. Provided you can open the trunk to access both batteries. There is also an emergency starting procedure to use the main battery instead of the starting battery to start the car in the owners manual. If both batteries are exhausted this emergency procedure will not work.
Jumper cables work per the procedure in the manual - portable quick start devices such as ones the auto club use to start a dead battery did not work for me on this car - they had to hook up jumper cables as indicated in the manual to successfully start.
The drivers side AGM battery is specific to the car and can be purchased (likely special order) at any Volkswagen or Audi dealer (maybe Porsche also) - the passenger side starting battery is more generic and can be replaced with a variety of batteries provided they meet the same specifications as the OEM battery.
Make certain any shop that changes the battery is familiar with the battery safety terminal disconnect procedures as if they accidentally trip this device it severs the battery cables using a compact explosive charge.
Well, the first answer is right but doesn't solve the problem and the second answer is wrong as the battery is in the trunk.
Just had the exact same problem. Battery dead on 2005 ion due to head lights left on which causes the key to stick in ignition.
Could not get to the battery in trunk because key stuck and power trunk switch also dead (no battery power, catch 22).
Solution: I hooked up a battery charger to the positive terminal under the hood by the fuse box and the negative to the engine block and charged it for 20 minutes. You could also jump it using the same terminals.
you don't need to open the rear hatch to jump the vehicle. open the hood and you will see a red cap that is meant for jumping the vehicle. there is a spot labeled ground as well, if there is no spot labeled ground, find a suitable bare metal spot to hook the ground up to. that should give the car enough power to get the key out and open the hatch. it may not be good enough to start the car but from that point you can get into the trunk and either jump it at the battery or replace the battery.
if jumping the vehicle doesn't work you can also try to look for blown fuses under the hood on the drivers side or in the passenger compartment in the middle console under the panel on the passenger side. the panel is held in by 4 clips and the fuse block is under the panel
