Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Galant

I just changed the thermostat on my vehicle and also put a new radiator in. My car blowing freezing cold air when i have it on hot. what might be wrong with my heat?

If you had any kind of heat before you started,you probably have air trapped in the heater core in the the rest of the coolant system

could it be that you didnt bleed the system correctly... some new vehicles the radiator cap is lower than the thermostat causing an air pocket... you have to bleed this out... if there is a sending unit next to the thermostat housing pull it and see in antifreeze comes out.
also did yo put the thermostat in correctly ?
did you add almost 3 gallons of coolant and water ?

At idle speed heater blows cold increase rpm heater blows hot


Usually it's a leaky thermostat allowing to much coolant to pass through it when it's closed.To check this, clamp off top rad hose completely(acting like a closed thermostat) If you have hot air from the heater now ,you do need a replacement thermostat.

If it where your water pump isthe vehicle would overheat. After you replaced the thermostat do you run the engine at idle with the radiator cap removed until the radiator fan came one? This will help push the air out of the system. There are two other possibilities. 1. The heater core is plugged. Back flushing the heater core may help remove the built up debris and get you heat again. 2. The blend door may not be fully transitioning from cold to hot. You should be ale to hear a district change in how the air sounds when switching from full hot to full cold. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. My heater blows cold air when car is stopped. i have installed a new water pump and the radiator is full of water.


you still have air trapped in the cooling system. Get front of car as high up as you can on a hill. Cold engine - loosen radiator cap, fill with 50/50 antifreeze mix. Start engine and run until upper radiator hose is hot (thermostat open). Engine should burp air and maybe spill some coolant, that's ok. Once burped, tighten cap, shut off engine and let it cool down while keeping the reservoir full. It will **** coolant out of reservoir as it cools. Keep it full.

If still cold air, take to a shop that has evac/fill equipment; they will **** air out and repalce with coolant. About $80.

It could be the electric fan is going on too easily.
The radiator and hoses should be almost too hot to touch.
And when cold, the fan should not really do on at all.
But the thermostat could be opening too soon also.
There are two hoses to the radiator, and when you start a cold car, only one should slowly get hot.
The other should stay cold until the thermostat opens, after the engine is good and hot.
If both start slowly getting warm at the same time, then you need a new thermostat.
And also make sure you have enough coolant in the radiator.

did you buy the heater cores new heater core and radiator is two different things sounds like you thermostat is bad touch your bottom hose and your top are they both hot if ones hot and ones cold water is not circulating bad thermostat is the heater core put in right

Heater blows hot air while car is moving but cold air while idling. The intake manifold was changed last spring, the thermostat has been changed 3 times and the temperature sending unit has been changed....


That sounds like the coolant level is low. If it is not the use of "stop leak" has probably caused a partial clog which restricts the flow of water unless the vehicle is turning higher RPMS. While sitting still raise the RPMS to about 2000 and see if the heater blows hot air to see if the above mentioned problems are fact.

You may want to reconsider if the fan is working at it's full potential.It seems when the vehicle is moving the extra air flow compensates for the fan not blowing hard enough.Check for radiator obstructions such as leaves and debris.And check for small leaks.Also there may be an air pocket in the system which can still seem like the system is full.With vehicle cold take off radiator cap and run vehicle.Turn on heat to highest setting (blowing).When vehicle reaches thermostat rated temperature(opened thermostat) you will see coolant go down in radiator.Fill radiator while the engine rpm's are up (have someone hold the throttle to where the rpm's are at about 1800) then put on cap before returning to idle.This should remove the pocket if there is one

Engine overheats when heater pipes connected


I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.
