Some 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer vehicles built prior to 3/4/2002 with 5R55W transmission, may exhibit no 3rd gear or slipping 2-3 shift with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0733 and P0745 present. This may be due to a broken intermediate band.

ACTION
If the conditions described are verified:

^ Follow Service Procedure "A" to confirm band is broken.

^ Follow Service Procedure "B" after verifying a band is broken.

Per Procedure "B", if a broken band is found replacement of both the OD and intermediate bands and pistons will be necessary. However, only an inspection of the direct clutch drum may be necessary. The drum should not be replaced unless damage is found.

OBD II codes P0733 & P0745

This is an easy one, the P0733 is a 3rd gear ratio error and the745 is the corresponding solenoid code. More than likely it's a broken band and/or the piston that applies said band

There is a problem in the shifting of the gear box. Probably a faulty in the over drive servo that is not shifting until the throttle position has changed.. Run fault codes and look for servo/sensor faults and next have an oil change done on the gear box. The rear end has nothing to do with gear shifting so you replaced the rear end bearings for no advantage.

Error Code P0745
  • If the error code checker returns a P0745 code, it is indicative of a transmission issue. Error codes in the 700s refer to transmission problems. The P0745 error code refers specifically to a malfunctioning pressure control solenoid. This should be checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.

    ...my 2002 ford expl. showing

Replace your Pressure Control Solenoid, or take it to a shop and have them replace it. This can cause both of the codes you are experiencing.

    Hi there,

As your Auto transmission is fully electronic, it could be anything from faulty sensors sending incorrect signals to the trans computer, or faulty internal components. Your best bet is to have the trans computer scanned for 'fault codes' (as the computer monitors and retains all faults) by your local Ford dealership.

This process will identify the likely component/s which are causing this problem.

My guess is, there may be a problem with the 2nd clutch (yes that's right, automatics have internal clutches!), input and/or output shaft switches sending incorrect signals to the computer.

But, there could be so many other possibilities....so, I recommend you get the codes scanned and go from there.....
