Look way down just behind the throttle body intake assembly, low on the drivers side near the firewall and below the brake fluid container. You'll see a square yellow dipstick which doesn't have a handle on it. It which accepts a 3/8 inch drive extension: stick the socket extension on it, reach down and depress the hold-down clip, and pull it out. It is sometimes easier to reach from the side of the car, reaching down low. Or just reach down and pull it out. You'll need a long funnel to put fluid in. Be sure that the car has been driven 15 minutes or so, stop, move to and stop in each gear about 5 seconds, and back to park. Check fluid level. Don't overfill by even a small amount.

How do I get to the spark plugs on my 96 960 2.9?

Remove the black cover ( wording VOLVO and 24 Valves) on the upper cylinder block by unscrewing the 6 small screws. But extra careful and removing the individual ignition coil for each spark plug as the wire hareness may be bristle and will break away from the socket.

1992 volvo 960 - flashing arrow & mode lights happens occaisionally. Do I have to do immediate repairs?

I'd get this looked at immediately, it's not the sort of thing that will go away. I'd start by checking fluid levels in the box.

Needs transmission fluid cannot find where fluid goes?

look for the trans fluid dip stick. Get a funnel with a thin flexible hose at the bottom, and pour the trans fluid in where the dipstick goes. Give it a few mins to settle, and dip the stick to measure again. Add slowly to avoid overfill. If overfill, you will need to remove some, and that can be tricky.
(Shop vac, fluid container, etc... oe drin it from the bottom. )

Starter Replacement in a "96" 960

Disconnect the battery and wires going to the starter. If air charge tube is in the way you can remove it. I am not looking at a S-70 turbo right now but sure that I have never had to remove intake to R&R a starter. There might be a bracket on the passenger side of starter with a 12mm bolt into the front of the engine and two 10mm nuts onto the starter. Remove two 13mm stud bolts that hold starter in place and slide out. New starter goes in reverse order.
