Driving down highway and i hear tapping/knocking noise the a loud noise like i hit sum thin then car goes completely dead no lights no sound nunthin wont turn over i check cables battery starter etc its...
There are several things that could be happening here - how many miles do you have on the car, and have you ever changed the Timing belt ( typically done around 60,000 to 70,000 miles)? Does the starter turn over strong or does it struggle ( slow wow.....wow....wow.....kind of sound) ?Do you smell rotten eggs under the hood? Is the battery wall swollen out or bulging?
Are your battery or starter wires/connections corroded, or do they have lumpy sections in them? depending on the miles and whether or not you had the timing belt changed, I would probably first check to see if the timing belt broke. If it did, you need to find out if you have an interference motor or not ( call your local Toyota dealer and have your Vehicle identification Number ready ( VIN). Also ask them the factory recommendation of miles to change the timing belt.
If you do have an interference motor, you may have just broken some exhaust valves when the belt went - meaning an advanced repair is needed, possibly replacing the cylinder head.( I hope its not the head !) This type of repair is serious and complicated, with many precision steps and specialty tools needed to complete.
After checking these things, if you want to let me know what you've discovered I can advise you from there.
Hope this helps and thanks for using Fixya!!
