How do you replace the third brake light bulb?

How do you remove the third brake light from the back window for replacement? (CHEVY says I have to take it to a dealer.) I cannot figure out how to get to the bulb to replace it. I do not want to damage anything....can I pry off the rubber/plastic plugs that seem to be covering the access bolts to the light assembly? IF YES, how do I pry the plugs off? Is a special tool needed?

If you do not know what you are doing you should go to a mechanic. A simple slip with a screw driver can cost a lot of money.

SOURCE: need 02 trailblazer third brake light removal

Open the full hatch.
Pull down the weather strip near the rear dome light.
There should be a wire with a connector in it. Disconnect it
Close the full hatch.

Open just the window hatch. There is 1 screw on either side of the bulb housing.

SOURCE: can not get to the bolt under the wheel speed sensor.

Should just have to unbolt the 3 or 4 bolts holding it in the spindle. No special tools are required. You should be able to get to them with a wrench if you have to. Plus you do have to undo the nut holding the axle in.

How do I replace the high mount brake light on my 2011 Chevy Malibu?

You need to take the back seat out. Remove the C-Pillar trim panels. Lift up on the package shelf. Unplug the wiring connector. I've had mine out when I changed the speakers.

BTW, Its Not a Bulb. Its a LED Assembly. Replaced as a whole unit. Unless your good with electronics and soldering.

I replaced the bulb in the back window brake light but still not working?

The third brake light is powered thru the brake switch but does not go thru the turn signal switch.
You may need a wiring diagram to know where to look next.

How do you replace the third brake light on a 1997 chevy cavalier convertible?

There are two screws that hold it in, remove them (phillips head most likely)

gently remove the light (may need to use a flat head screw driver and a rag to gently pry it out)

with the light all the way out, twist out the bulb socket.

If you are just replacing the bulb, remove the old bulb, insert a new one, and repeat the steps in reverse order. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the screws.

Hope this helps

2002 Chevy Blazer, rear brake lights do not work but the third light above the window does. Replaced bulbs and still not working I have the same problem got a fix it ticket the other.  Did you guys...

Trace the wiring as it comes from the laft and right brake light. May have to remove the brake light covers. Sounds like a crimped or shorted wire leading to the brake lights, possibly a loose or broken ground wire. One of the wires leading from the fuse block to the rear oif the vehicle could also have been damaged if the door sills have been removed by someone earlier to install things like speaker wires, etc. Also check to see if you have tail lights and directional signals.

When you replaced the bulbs did you get bulbs with double filiments - one acts as the tail lights, the other serves as the brake lights (both inside the same bulb). Compare the ID numbers on the bulbs with those which are required for this vehicle, but you should clearly see two different filiments inside of the bulbs when viewed from the side.
