1998 Dodge Caravan locks automatically while

1998 Dodge Caravan was locking repeatedly while sitting with the ignition switch off. I removed the interior door trim panel and spread the two switch wires apart and the repeated locking stopped.
It now locks automatically while sitting with ignition off, then periodically continues to make locking noise while sitting. While driving the locks automatically lock at about 16 mph as advertised and do not continue to relock. I'm thinking of replacing the sliding door switch but can't see how to since the switch is behind the metal door frame. I don't think the BCM or lock relay is the culprit.
What do you think.

SOURCE: 1996 Dodge caravan--dash guages flicker

In responding to rbenjami, I am not proposing the same solution for all who claim to have a similar problem because I don't believe that that is the case. When the gauges flicker periodically it may be a case of a bad body computer, which is a big deal and may be covered by warranty beyond the normal 3 yr./36k miles. For those with issues related to use of seat warmers, that is not uncommon and should lead to discontinued use.

SOURCE: Door locks dont work

2 things I would try before replacing an expensive BCM. Disconnect your battery for 5 minutes or so, then reconnect, and see if that helped at all. I have heard in some cases it worked successfully. If that doesn't cure it, I would go to the plug on the BCM itself, (with battery disconnected) and pull the plug off, inspect it, and clean it & mating pins on BCM very thoroughly with contact cleaner or similar electrical cleaner. Add a little di-electric grease to connection & put it back together nice & tight & see what happens. The BCM is usually located on passenger side in kick panel area,(by right foot when sitting) either behind kick panel or above it.

SOURCE: 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Driver Door Lock/Unlock Switch

sorry not sure the 12v prob will help this swtich works on 5v off 3v unlock 1v lock single wire lock/unlock logic signals
I found wiring diagrams at
http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2004/docs/wd/rswd/tc.pdf
it is 2004 but use the wiring diagrams to test the wires
(most likely to fail where they flex)
because it is using logic gates disconnect the plug at each end of the wire you are testing or the damn thing will find a few diffrent ways to trick you.

SOURCE: part # and price for BCM 1997 dodge caravan elect

You'll have to call local dealer, or if you want to take a chance with used at auto wreckers, it will have to be exact same part number, but personally I don't recommend that. Here's a number to call for rebuilt BCM's gauranteed, that will, if nothing else give you another option. New is probably $800- $1000 unfortunately. 1-877-388-5889. There is always a chance that removing connectors attached to it, and cleaning well with contact cleaner or electrical cleaner (tuner spray cleaner from radio shack) may jsut be a cure if your lucky as well. I certainly would try that before spending that kind of money on a new module.

Sounds like the keyless entry system is malfunctioning. Remove the door lock relay for now until the dealer can reprogram it.

I have a 98 dodge caravan and when i put the key

You may have to get a new key cut if the tumblers in the ignition lock are not being lined up to unlock the ignition. If the key's was bent in the ignition lock, the ignition lock may be bad and need to be replaced with a new ignition key. Try replacing the ignition key's first, but if you have a spare key. Try that first and if the spare key's don't turn the ignition lock, then you may have to replace the ignition lock. Good luck and keep me posted. oh and try moving the steering wheel left to right as you try to turn the ignition lock.

this is form the owners manual, page 19:

switch.

2. Cycle the ignition switch ON/OFF four times ending
in the OFF position. (do not start the engine)

3. Within 10 seconds of the final cycle, press the interior

4. A single chime will sound to signify that you have

How do you replace a ignigtion lock cylinder on a 1998 dodge

REMOVAL:

NOTE: The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before removing any components in the area of the air bag system. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
Allow the SIR system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes, before performing any removal procedures. The air bag system is now disabled.

Remove the key cylinder (ignition lock).
Using a No. 10 Torx® tamper proof bit, remove the ignition switch mounting screw. Depress the ignition switch retaining tab and carefully pry the ignition switch from the steering column.
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch and remove the switch from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION:
Be sure the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the actuator shaft in the ignition lock housing is in the RUN position.
Reconnect the electrical connectors to the ignition switch.
Carefully install the ignition switch, making sure the ignition switch snaps over the retaining tabs.
Install and tighten the ignition switch mounting screw.
Install the key cylinder (ignition lock). Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedures.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Check switch operation.

Good Luck and hope this helps

When I turn the key off, it is like disconnecting the battery.

Does the car have a battery kill switch installed with its alarm system? It sounds as though when you cut off the key it engages the kill switch which removes power from the vehicle when the key is removed and the alarm is tripped.
