With a code reader. Some auto parts stored will do this for free but be aware that a code never really tells you exactly whats going on. To confirm a given part is bad the system has be checked first.
Also with alot of newer cars when everything is tested and deemed ok its possible there is a PCM update to address certain codes. So in these cases you wouldnt know unless a professional diagnosed the car for you.
You count the flashes on your check engine light if it flashes three quick times then pauses then flashes another 4times the code would be 34. make sure you let it cycle to ensure that you have read all of the codes. you have read them all when they start to repeat.
Take it to AutoZone or Oreilly's and they will read the codes/ Take a pencil and paper to write the codes down as each are important in diagnosing the problems you may have.
