I have a 2004 Ford F250 diesel w/170k miles. recently on 2 occasions the truck has seemingly run out of gas with 1/4 tank of gas still in it. Put 5 gallons in and all was well. Now, it ran out of gas at 3/4 full. I noticed that even though the tank was 3/4 full the gas gauge with the ignition on indicated 1/8th of a tank. I put 5 gallons back in and it then registard full and when i turned the ignition back on it said full. It still won't start. I can turn the ignition off and on 5 times and that seems to get enough gas to the engine and it will run for 5 to 15 seconds and then stop as if it ran out of gas again. what is the problem?

the best way will be to drop the fuel tank and totally empty it away if you have only put a small amount of gas in the truck then you can get away with filling it up with fresh diesel
on most occasions its the cooling system for them thats at fault, try upgrading the oil coolant rad for the turbo, it might be a bit expencive to start but will probly save you keeping on buying housing for your turbo, or check make sure you do not have a blockage in the oil cooling system, hope this helps
first, is this a diesel? if it is there is a line or oring loose allowing it to **** air--diesels dont like leaks like that and there is a whole procedure for voiding the air from the lines on diesels. next could be the in tank pump and also does it have duel tanks? does the duel tank switch work? running out of fuel with in tank pumps can burn up the pump (the fuel itself provides lubrication and cooling for the pump, gas or diesel) and of course check the filter, running out and refilling could have disturbed trash in the tank
the fuel pump in the front tank could be over heating causing it to shut down for a short period of time. gas in the tank acually works like a coolant for tank mounted pumps so less gas = more heat
the pump is part of the filter/separator not in the tank no fuel will come out if filter is removed make sure there is fuel in the upper filter if there is the pump is ok it might be an oil pressure concern
do you have a diagram showing where the fuel pump is located?
