2004 Dodge Intrepid heater problem

I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid. Just recently in the last few days I have noticed the heater is not working like it used to. Now when I pre heat my car before driving there is no heat coming from the heater vents. It is not until I have driven for a few miles before I start to feel heat. The odd part is when I stop driving such as waiting at a red light cold air replaces the warm air coming from the vents. I seem as if the heater is only blowing warm air when the car is in motion and the engine is running at a higher then idle speed. It has been extremely cold the last few days (-16 or so) but I have never had this problem during past winters. What do you think could be causing this problem and how can I fix it? I appreciate any help you can offer.

This sounds like your automatic climate control is starting to malfunction. Check to make sure your coolant is full, and temp is not fluctuating, and when your vehicle is warmed up, try using the low setting and feel for air temp. Is it warmer than if you turn it up? When at idle the vehicle is not producing heat the same as if you are driving, putting load on your engine and more air/fuel combustion means more heat, which is why you can feel heat while driving. Ideally you should feel heat as soon as the engine is warming up, getting hotter as it reaches peak temp of 190-210 degrees. You can try to make sure your water control valve is not blocked, and all electrical connections are secure. This will be located close to your firewall and connected to the coolant tubes that run into your firewall to your heater-core. Also use recirc (setting)to try to summon as much heat as possible, however ultimately, you may need to take you vehicle in for service. If it only warms when driving defrost will be an issue. Good luck.

Testimonial: "Thanks for your posting it help a lot and fixed the problem. I was happy that you not only were able to tell me one option to attempt but multiple ones if the first did not work. The directions were also very easy to understand for someone that is not mechanically inclined. Once again thank you for your time and answer."

Also would like to add, if your coolant is not topped off, you could get vapor lock, where as an air bubble blocks the heater core, and you get no heat from heater, so the vehicle may over heat. I have personally witnessed this multiple times, where as topping the vehicle off whilst cool, squeezing the big radiator hoses a little to burp it, watching the coolant rise and fall from where the cap was removed, (and hopefully seeing bubbles, if not squeeze in little bursts), can also be the simple task to solve this type of problem.
Just check to make sure there is nothing leaking while the vehicle is running. NEVER REMOVE the radiator cap on a hot car!

This problem has gotten a big response, so thought I'd add to it.

My dodge intrepid over heatz when my heat dont work every few dayz

Hi David, I'm glad to help. 3 Things could be happening here. (1) There could be air trapped in the cooling system somewhere, which you can remove with thye bleeder screw near the thermostat housing. Try this first. (2) The cooling fans may be trying to go out for the radiator. The next time the problem occurs raise the hood and see if the cooling fans are working, if not replace the cooling fan module from the dealer. (3) Blown Head Gasket. This is not very likely because you say it happens ever few days and if it were a head gasket then it would happen after running a few minutes everytime. Hope this helps and have an awesome day David.

Blower motor resistors are super common failures in these. The connector for it can also get melted.

Heater blows cold air 2002 dodge intrepid

I had his problem a few days ago, it happened because my thermostat housing was leaking coolant. I changed it out and refilled the coolant. Heats like a champ now and it only cost me 50 bucks and an hour of my time. I would suggest first of all checking your coolant level.

My computer keeps telling me that shift cylanod (sp?) A is out but I have replaced it many times in the last few days. It still woun't shift either.

This happened to my sisters Intrepid as well. She replace them 4 times before her transmission finally went out. Its a major weak link in the dodge intrepid line

2004 dodge intrepid a/c problems

Check for loss of coolant also. If you can see/smell oily deposits on windshield, it's unlikely it's from the a/c system as there is relatively little lubricant there. More likely your heater core is leaking and allowing coolant to be blown up onto the windshield. There will also be a distinctive odor with this.

Why does my defroster and heater only blow out cold air in my 2004 dodge intrepid

Check your coolant reservoir under the hood. Your water/antifreeze mixture is probably low because with the smart design of this car low coolant first starves the heater core of coolant before the level gets so low that you hurt your engine. Likely you will have to add coolant a few times before the system gets all the air out of the heater core and engine caused by letting it get low, so check a couple of times a day until the coolant level in the reservoir remains at the Max Fill line when checked a few different times. That will signal when the system has removed all the air from the coolant system.
