It could be a faulty brake master cylinder though your description does remind me of a car that had the disc pads wrongly fitted and the anti-rattle springs were pushing the pads away from the discs instead of providing resistance.
A similar symptom can be experienced when a wheel bearing has excess free play and pushes the pads away from the disc.
I would use a hose clamp and isolate each brake in turn until the brake pedal operation is normal. If no clamping operation makes a significant difference I would then clamp two, three and then four hoses when if there is still no difference I would suspect the master cylinder or the basic brake pedal and servo adjustments.
I can't think of a reason why the battery change should cause that light to flash. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) has a separate computer, probably under the hood someplace. Many of these have the word "reset" somewhere on the computer. Often if you hold a small magnet next to the word "reset" it may clear the computer and turn off the light. There are ways to get the "fault codes" from the ABS by activating combinations of controls - like cruise control in combination with odometer, for example. The combinations are not logical. Search online for ABS and your car's make and model and you should find the instructions for getting and interpreting the codes. As an example three flashes of the ABS light followed by two more might mean right rear wheel sensor.
um, clunking brakes when braking after you repaired them? EMERGENCY PROCEDURE REQUIRED Have the car towed to a reputable shop. Your brake pads or calipers or wheel are coming apart. they could fail while driving. This is likely very serious. Hopefully, it is just the anti rattle clips not holding the pads in place but do not chance it. Also, consider a mobile mechanic
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Front wheel
Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads and the 4 anti-squeal shims
To Install:
CAUTION Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or replacement of the brake caliper.
Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
Install or connect the following:
Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.
2 brake pads
Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
Clip
Front wheel
Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.
you have one on the inside of each wheel.
