Usually, if your not getting heat it's because the cooling system for the engine is low on coolant. It could be the heater control cable too, sometimes they break or come unhooked. Does it feel like the lever is doing something you should be able to hear the little doors open and close inside the heater as you move the levers back and forth. Pay close attention when moving the temp lever, listen for movement inside the heater. Also, some systems are vacuum operated and you could have a broken vacuum line. The vacuum systems will usually go into the defrost mode if the vacuum line breaks or comes unhooked. Make sure your cooling system is full, keep in mind if you are adding coolant to the surge tank (the semi-clear plastic one) it won't draw that coolant into the radiator until the engine is in the cool down mode. The best way to check the system is when it's cold, if there is no coolant in the surge tank, remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator first. Then replace the cap and fill the surge tank to the "cold full line" then run the engine until it's fully warmed up. At this point the coolant in the surge tank should be up to "hot full line" if not add some more to the surge tank. Now let the vehicle sit until fully cooled off (overnight) and check it again, repeat if necessary. If your losing coolant at a rapid rate you better figure out where it's going, It can get into the oil, if you have an internal leak. Check the oil, is it way over full? Pay close attention to what type antifreeze you have, different manufacturers use different coolants, do not mix, green with pink or pink with yellow. Stick to what ever color you have they are not compatable with one another.

SOURCE: front heater only blows warm

It could be a couple of things.
1) Check the fuses to make sure they are good.
2) It could be the relay switches, that happens occasionally a mechanic will need to look for that problem though.
3) The blower motor could be on the fritz. depending on its location a mechanic might need to do this also.

I hope this helps out.

SOURCE: the heater is blowing out cold air. I changed my

Make sure the heater control valve is opening and closing. This is likely under the hood near the rear of the engine. There will be coolant hoses connected to it. This valve allows hot coolant to enter the heater. If the valve fails or gets corroded shut, no hot coolant can reach the heater; and you will have no heat.

If the line from the rocker arm to the air duct on an 98 oldsmobile silhouette is not hooked up will that cause problems with heat , cold air when gauge is reading hot?

The hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner is just a fresh air source for the crankcase.
What you are describing is a radiator low on coolant or has air in the cooling system.

Im not getting any heat blows cold air. i changed the thermastat and nothing. it was blowing out hot air in the vent setting but nothing now.

need to check your blend air door located behind the dash on the passanger side, if that checks out good then you have a blockage either in your heater core or hoses to/from the heater core.

If the heater core isn't leaking it doesn't likely need changing. It sounds like you could have a problem with the heater control valve - a valve in one of the heater hoses that controls flow through the hose. If you smell coolant and see moisture on your windshield (inside) or have coolant leaking onto the floor - you might need the heater core replaced.

Heater blows cold air when idle

Sounds like you may have a partially plugged heater core. You could flush this out separately, from flushing radiator & engine block. Diconnect heater hoses going to your heater core and clamp off, so not to loose coolant from engine. Now hook up separate hose to one side of heater core pipe and flush out with typical garden hose. Repeat procedure on both heater core inlets. Reconnect original heater hoses and test difference. You may have to add an additional litre of antifreeze. If this don't work i suggest changing heater core. Good luck.........Ron.
