Re: Error msg on honda civic 2001 radio
If you have the five digit code, you need to remove the negative battery cable for 1 minute and then put the cable back on. hit the power button on the radio and type in the five digit radio code and you should be good to go.

Hi - thanks for your interest. The message on the radio actually says Err and nothing else. It was like that when I bought it a couple of weeks ago. Through the power of the internet I found the code yesterday (by pressing 1 and 6 continuously before switching on). But now I don't know what to do with the code -as my radio says err and not code. How do I get it to say code? Do I then in put it using the preset buttons - button 1 for 1 in the code etc.? Any help info welcome. Thanks Newbie car owner K

Two further thoughts: 1. This url will take you to the Honda Owner's Link. I have been told that if you register with them (no charge) you are able to get radio codes by using the VIN number of the Honda. I don't know that for a fact because I've never needed to do so. 2. I know that sometimes, if you have the ECU (your car's computer) reset, it will change the ERR on the radio to CODE. Autozone of some such place can plug their OBDII code reader into your DTC socket (somewhere under your dash) and clear whatever codes might show up, no charge.
Actually, this is how it works (normally). If an audio unit with theft protection is disconnected from electrical power, you must enter a unique code number into the unit or it will not work. This code and the audio unit?s serial number are listed on the anti-theft ID card that comes with the vehicle. If this card is lost, you must obtain the audio unit serial number in order to get the radio code (some people say that they have found the code on a sticker inside the glove compartment, but I wouldn?t count on that). Some newer vehicles allow you to retrieve the audio unit serial number electronically from the radio. Refer to your owner?s manual for the specific procedure (the following usually will work: Turn the radio off. Push the preset 1, preset 6, and power buttons at the same time, then quickly release.) . Some older vehicles (model year 2003 and older) require a visit to the dealer in order to retrieve the audio unit serial number. Once you have the audio unit serial number, you can call Auto Customer Service at (800) 999-1009 or have the dealer look up the radio code. I don't know what you are getting when you push the presets 1 and 6 and the power button (because your car is older than the ones that that's supposed to work on), but if you are getting something, it would be the radio serial number, not the code. Once you have the (I think it is 8 digits, in two sets of readout numbers from the dial) serial number, you can carry out the rest of the process. That is, IF the ERR you are showing is a CODE err (normally the dial would say CODE not ERR, but who knows).
Does the error say CODE? Have you recently had a battery failure, or disconnected the battery? If you can be more specific and leave a comment, I may be able to help you.
