'97 540i spluttering & cutting out

All of a sudden my 1997 540i has started spluttering at idle & low revs & cutting out, i think theres also a coolant or oil leak from the passenger side (liquid pooled just behind the headlight) thats occured at the same time. The engine will run ok (sounds slightly 'rough') when sitting still at 3000rpm or over. As soon as the revs drop below 3000 again it starts spluttering and will die down and cut out. Pleeeease help, Many many many thanks

Best bet is to go get any codes that may be stored in the PCM. This will take alot of the guess work out of diagnosing it. Or remove the spark plgs and replace them.. If you have 50,000 or more this could be the cause but a code may tell you which one is the issue

I'd guess: not enough fuel flow. could be a fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator. No check engine codes? I would think there should be some that would help diagnose.

Hi, This seems like the automatic choke is not working best & easy way is get a choke cable from scrap yard & and use that and ignore the automatic choke. Bmw e36 328i cuts out at idle,wont krank,runs rough at idle.
The battery could still be bad and if you don't have a totally good battery in the car it won't run right. Take to one of the parts stores and they can check it for you for free. Probably as simple as a battery.
