How do I locate the fuel pump relay on 1987 gti

On the relay panel, underneath the dash board, near the foot pedals. The fuel pump relay is usually on the top right corner of the panel. 72837b01-8547-4996-9055-f1711813b3b9.gif

1991 VW GTI 8 Valve 1.8 Starts ok, then will die on me after a few minutes of idling. A few months ago, the problem wasn't as bad. Past few days it would make a clicking sound in the dash area and...

There are only a couple of relays that it could be. One for the fuel pump and one for the computer. It they aren't expensive, I would replace both. If they are expensive, I would put a voltmeter on the fuel pump positive side to see if the power is cutting out. If that is ok, then I would do the same to the computer. The wiring diagrams are available on autozone.com.

Fuel pump relay working intermitently.

is the relay ok? i think what you are hearing could be 2 relays at the same time. i think the fuel relay works with another aluminium looking one. there's usually a few of them that are identical so you can swop to check.
