Our brake lights keep going out, the Stop LPS Fuse keeps popping. My husband checked wires, nothing looked wrong. He replaced the brake lamp switch and fuse still popped. Now he's checking actual tail light area, help please. Jeep Wrangler 2000 TJ
Check to see if someone has installed a tow hitch on the rear, they would have spliced in the wiring in the rear of vehicle, thats where i find alot of corroded wire that were poorly taped.

Checking the correct wire's ? Orange wire is B+ power into brake lamp switch & white wire coming out of switch . STOP LPS fuse 20 amp. under hood fuse box . Check with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter , Tab's on top of fuse ,B+ on both side's ? find connector C-202 ,check pin's E & F , these are the wire's to an from brake lamp switch . Look at the wiring diagram here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size. Under system click on lighing , then under subsystem click on exterior lighting . Click the search button then the blue link .
C202
On the left side of the I/P on the back of the cluster
Check the switch halfway up or top of the pedal . It may be worth trying a squirt if wd40 on the button nipple first and push it in and out a few times . Sometimes the spring moves inside them .
Do you know how to test using a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Is there B+ voltage going into the brake light switch ? An coming out when the brake pedal is pressed ? What fuse's ? There is only one fuse for the brake lights !
The BRAKE SW fuse in the RH I/P fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the normally-open stop lamp switch. When you press the brake pedal the switch contacts close and battery positive voltage is supplied to the left and right stop lamp assemblies and to the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The left and right stop lamp along with the CHMSL are grounded at G302.
Do you know about the right insturment panel fuse box ?

There is an issue, you have a dead short in the circuit, no quick fix for this. You must first get a wiring diagram of the entire circuit and then follow it until you locate the shorted wire or component.
Check the relays under the hood and the incab relays. Also check the continuity on the brake light assembly, those boards have been known to go out and i have seen both of them bad before.
Stop Lamp Circuit Description
The STOP HAZ fuse in the IP junction block supplies battery positive voltage to the normally open stop lamp switch. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the switch contacts close and battery positive voltage is supplied to the center mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) and both left and right stop lamp assemblies. The left stop lamp is grounded at G304 and the right stop lamp is grounded at G304.
