I have a 1996 caddy sedan deville which does not seem to go into third gear. I checked the fluid and level is fine but a bit foamy. It has 100k miles on it. Should I change the xmission fluid and filter as a start? Thanks.

Mr TransDoktor, Thanks for your prompt response, but IN regards to this 96 Caddy deville:
Right before I started having this up shift problem from 2nd to third gear my battery died due to leaving an interior light on. I was wondering if this has anything to do with this problem--ie maybe the computer needs to reset or be reset?

Additional info: I just took it to a Cadillac dealer and the tech said it was not returning any fault codes!! Since this is the case the tech said it has to be internal and must therefore be replaced? Any input Transdoktor would be very helpful. I don't know if that is the easy way out or should I get another opinion? I do not know enough this to say anything intelligent.
    Thanks, Rick

Thank you transdoktor, I will take it for a 2nd opinion from a long time transmission shop for sure, but I do not understand how it can have no codes. This basically says it is operating fine and it is not. Shouldn't it indicate something? Is it possible that the linkage is slipping past Drive and right into 2nd gear? Or maybe since I have never had to change the fluid and filter could the viscosity be off? I am just searching for better news I suppose. Thanks again for all your help. You are terrific!!

The fools that built the transmission used plastic soliniod controls in the valve body inside the transmission. These are broken. They cost about eighty five dollors from the dealer. The bad news is the transmission bottom needs to be removed to do the repair. The good news is the transmission does not need to be removed from car.

Changing the fluid and filter will not correct a no upshift issue. The transmission on this car is computer controlled. You should have it scanned for codes. Very common issue on these is the turbine speed sensor fails, which does require removing the transmission to replace.

At this point, with no third gear, and no available codes, I would have to agree with the dealers diagnosis. You may however, get another opinion by a reputable transmission shop in your area. Hope I have helped you out.

94 caddy sedan deville 4.9 transmisson wont engage into any gears

If you are sure the fluid level is full, the filter could be leaking pressure or not allowing fluid to pass thru. There may not be enough fluid in the valve body to make the transmission function.

1994 caddy deville. will only engage in park. When shift to reverse or drive, it does not engage the gear. Is transmission the only possible problem here?

well 1st check your fluid level and contamination and transmission seletor switch on your transmission otherwise your valve body not delivering fluid pressure to apply clutches to get ingear
