I've been told by a reputable mechanic that 2001 Kia Sophias often need timing belt replacement at 60,000 miles. Any truth to that statement?

For California models recommended at 105,000 miles.Belt needs to be inspected at 60,000 and 90,000, miles and replace at 105,000 miles.
Except California replace at 60,000 miles. Note 1.8L engine is a interference engine, if timing belt goes bad will cause major internal engine damage.

Yes. It is recommended for any vehicle to have the belt check and//or replaced at 60,000. I would have it inspected before having it replaced.

This will need a hands on inspection by a qualified mechanic. i suggest the Kia dealership, but at a minimum it needs to go to a different shop than the one you've been taking it to as they seem to not know what they're doing.

2001 Kia was runing fine then just died it cranks but will not start

If you have not replaced the timing belt and your car has 50,000 miles or more the problem is a broken timing belt. I don't know the exact reason but Kia timing belts will not last more than 60,000 miles.
