Brake job torque spec

Replacing the brake pads and I need to know the torque spec on the caliper bolts when I put them back on.

First you want to remove brake fluid from brake resovoir, raise front wheels off ground and set park brake or block rear wheels. Remove front wheels, keep steering wheel unlocked so you can turn rotors side to side. Loosen bolts that hold caliper end gently pry caliper free from rotor, remove caliper and remove pads, use bungy cord to hang caliper away from rotor, have rotors measured to see if they are thick enough to have machined, replace if out of specs. Match up pads with old ones, use anti- squeak red liquid and put layer on back of pads, let dry. Use tool to put pistons back into calipers, slowly put pistons back into bore while opening up bleeder screw so ABS won't be damaged. After rotors resurfaced, wash with rubbing alchohal to remove any oils from hands, install rotors and reverse putting pads back onto caliper and reinstall, torque caliper bolts to factory specs and tighten bleeder screws. Install wheels, torque lug nuts to factory specs and replace brake fluid in resovoir. Lower car carefully to ground and press brake peddle without pumping it. Any air in system should bleed out, if not get someone to help with bleeding system. Road test to ensure no squeaks or pulling, burn brakes in slowly.

How to change brake pad and check rotors

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.
  2. Remove the front wheels. toy_car_cam_frontbrakepads.gif

  3. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of the 2 brake pads.
  5. Remove the wear indicator from each of the 2 brake pads.
To Install:
NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press piston into the caliper.
  2. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of each anti-squeal shim.
  3. Install the anti-squeal shims on each pad.
  4. Install the pad wear indicator clip to the pads.
  5. Install the pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing upward.
  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

To Remove:

  3. Remove the caliper slide pins.
  4. Remove the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  5. Remove the rear brake calipers.
  6. Remove the 2 brake pads with the anti-squeal shims.
  7. Remove the anti-squeal shims and pad wear indicators from brake pads.
To Install:
  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press the piston into the caliper.
  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  1. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the front brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the front wheel disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the front disc.
  2. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bolts 79 ft-lb (107 Nm).
  3. Install the brake caliper. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the front wheel.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the rear wheel

Need instruction on installing front brake pads for 1994 Camry...


The Camry brake system is very simple and easy to work with

Raise and support the car safely and remove the front wheel.

Undo the two bolts that hold the brake piston to the caliper. These are the two bolts toward the front. Remove and support the piston in a manner that does not place any strain on the brake line. For example, you can use a length of string to hang the piston from the strut spring.

With the piston out of the way, undo the two remaining bolts closer to the axle, that hold the brake caliper to the knuckle. Remove the caliper.

The old pads will slide out of the caliper. Note how they fit in place before removing them, so you can place the new ones the same way. Remove the shims from the back of each pad and place them on the back of the new pads.

Slide the new pads into the caliper.

Bolt the caliper onto the knuckle.

Use a clamp or a piston expander to push the piston back so it will fit over the new pads. Take care while doing this that you do not overflow the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir.

Put the piston back in place over the pads and bolt it onto the caliper.

Make sure all bolts are torqued to spec.

When replacing the pads, remove and inspect the rotors. If necessary, have them turned or replace them.

Also, inspect the calipers and make sure the spring arms move freely. Inspect the caliper hardware (clips and springs) and replace if necessary.

Inspect the pistons. If necessary, drain and refill the pistons with fresh brake fluid, and bleed the system.

With the brakes back in place, check that the brake pedal is firm or firms up after a few pumps at the most. If not, you will need to figure out why.

Replace the wheel, lower the car, torque the lug nuts to spec, and you're done.

Brakes are an essential safety system of your car. Follow these instructions at your own risk. Refer to a complete service manual.

Brake caliper bolt torque settings for merc a170 cdi im cleaning the calipers and replacing pads, on rear brakes, would like to know the torque settings for the bolts


A quick phonecall to the service department of your local dealer should confirm what they should be. Alternativlely you could check the current tightness of the bolts on the caliper you haven't disturbed yet. I'd estimate around 60nm should be correct.

I can't even think how you would get a c clamp in there? Any other tricks to getting that done cause it's kicking my ****!


Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheels
    • Pad retaining clip
    • Cap from the bottom caliper bolt
    • Lower caliper mounting bolt and swing the caliper up
    • Brake pads
To install:
  1. Press the caliper piston back into the cylinder using tool 49 0221 600C.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Outer pad to the mounting support and inner pad to the caliper
    • Caliper. Torque the caliper lower mounting bolt to 19–22 ft. lbs. (25–30 Nm). Install the bolt cap.
    • Retaining clip
    • Wheels
  3. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads.
