1994 4runner, six cyl. putting rebuilt heads on, toyota head gaskets, new head bolts "tvs 10.9". Torqued bolts in pattern to 33 foot pounds. another 1/4 turn in the pattern. and into my next and final 1/4 turn (required by toyota book), 3 different bolts acted like they stripped. They still have torque to them(more than 33 foot pounds I checked) but it seems that they "gave way" going into the final turn. I can't imagine the bolts stripping, but they aren't from toyota. I did oil the bolts prior. Would the gasket be giving? What do I do? Do I eat the gasket, pull off the head and check the bolts? Can I pull a bolt out, check it and torque it back to 33pounds and then 180? Do I check all bolts by setting my torque wrench to "40 plus pounds" to make sure that I have equal torque all around? Ideas?

I had chased each bolt hole with WD-40 and blasted them out with air prior to install. I was on the final 1/4 turn when bolts acted as they did. Can I pull each bolt (one at a time) in order to check them then torque them down again without weakening the seal on the gasket?

Hi, we are re assembling my Toyota tazz 1.3 2001 engine, can I please have torque settings for everything

Head gasket Torque sequence
36 pounds then to 49 pounds then an additional 90 degrees. You should get new head bolts though because this style of bolt can stretch causing the head gasket to leak. See tightening pattern

I have a pontiac and i keep blowing head gasket on number one cylinder. I have installed new heads and gasket lasted about five years. I was wondering what the correct head bolt torque is for a 1995...

cylinder head bolts, step one;33 ft. lbs, second step rotate an additional 90-degrees (1/4 turn). do not put any oil or sealant on gasket. the gasket should seal itself if torqued properly.

Need the cylinder head torque settings on a toyota corolla 1990 model ae92 wiht a 4a-fc engine

Tighten in several passes to 44 foot pounds.

I just wanted to add. Since this is an aluminum cylinder head, I hope you loosened the head in the loosening torque pattern. The pattern opposite of the torque tightening pattern. If not, you stand the chance of warping the head.

Again, since it's an aluminum head, it needs to be checked for flatness. Most aluminum heads need to be surfaced before re-installing.

Tightening torque pattern is as follows:

1.The Drivers side of the engine is the Left side.
From the Front going towards the back; the bolts are numbered 10, 6, 1, 3, and 7.
From the Front going towards the back on the Passenger side; the bolts are numbered 8, 4, 2, 5, and 9.

The Exhaust and Intake Camshaft Bearing Cap bolts go to 9 foot pounds. Tighten gradually. One bolt to the other with so many foot pounds, work back, and forth up to 9lbs.

Camshaft Timing Pulley bolts go to 43 foot pounds. (In a tightening sequence, and gradually)
