How do I replace the ring gear and pinion in my 68 Camaro 12 bolt

I want to replace the ring gear and pinion in my 1968 Camaro with a 12 bold rear end. It has 373 ratio now but the rear end code said it had 410 ratio. I want to change the ratio to 410.

You can change the ratio back to 4.10. However, if you do not already have the specialty tools required to do the job, you will likely be better off finding a shop that will change the gears for you. A mistake as simple as incorrect backlash will result in destroyed ring & pinion gears.

Your cheaper options will be :
1. Find a matching rear-end with 4.10 gears and swap it in.
2. Purchase the ring and pinion, master install kit, and find a friend that has installed gears before to help you out.
3. Find a 4x4, Hotrod or auto shop that is will swap the gears for you. If the axle is in the car, it's usually more expensive than if you carried the axle in for them to work on.
4. Purchase R&P, Master install kit, all the required tools. Then hit the books to find the proper procedure and measurements for that axle.

Good Luck.

I have 1986 F350/ 460 engine. Dually small dump truck 3-4 cubic yards. I need to know the rear end gear ratio?? There is no tag on the cover bolts, just the vin number is available.

Should be a tag on the differential under one of the cover bolts that has that info on it. Otherwise you will have to take cover off and the ring gear will have the ration stamped on it on the edge... You could also count the teeth on the ring and pinion, divide the ring gear count by the pinion gear count.

I have a 99 chevy silverado with the 8.6 3.73 rear end. Is the torque specs for the rear yoke 270 ft lbs like the gmc Sierra

If you have an 8.6" ring you should have a 10 bolt axel. With this axel you don't torque the pinion nut. This style axel has a crush collar. Down below I forwarded the preload torque specs. If you do have a 12 bolt axel, the ring gear does get torqued but the ring gear will not be 8.6" Please write back if you need anything thing else. How2 change rear axle bearings and oil seal 3rd Gen Camaro

You must remove the rear cover of the differential and then remove the bolt that pins in the center pin that the pinion gears are mounted on, then push the axles inward and remove the "C" shaped clips that retain the axles in the gear carrier. The axle bearings are pressed into the axle tubes and you need a special tool to remove them, this goes for the axle grease seal as well. You will need to buy this tool kit on line or locally for more money.. Go to this LINK

Need to remove the ring gear assy to replace the pinion shaft bearing

The ring gear is bolted to what is called a ring gear carrier, the carrier is bolted inside the rear end housing with two bolts on each side, it is shimmed on each side to adjust backlash and pinion depth so DON'T mix up the left and right carrier shims, once the carrier is out with the ring gear attached you can remove the pinion shaft and drive out the bearing races of the pinion bearings. You also need to remove the pinion flange where the drive shaft U-Joint attaches, just hammer it off with a brass faced hammer (a steel hammer will run the flange) once the large center nut is removed.

My 1996 camaro z-28 need the rear end replaced, so were is the id tag, that gives me the correct rearend , in hte car and should I pull out the complete rear end and have it rebuiled, and then reinstalled...

If you take the VIN # to a GM dealer they should be able to tell you the original rear end that the vehicle came with. If you are going to take the rear end to a shop they will be able to tell when they take it apart. If it is a posi rear end it will have a tag under one af the cover bolts (if it has not been removed) Once inside a posi rear end is immediately identifiable from the clutch pack. Also the number of teeth is stamped on each (pinion and ring) gear. Divide ring gear # by Pinion gear # to get rear end ratio. Didn't get directly to your question, but I hope this helps. Let me know. Thanks

Rear end noise and seizing now

Sounds like one of two things is happening
1). the spider gears are binding
2). the ring gear is binding on the pinion

Check the pinion gear bolt for tightness first, then check for excessive end play. Make sure you have the correct fluid for your rear end type (limited slip takes one type, semi-posi takes another type and even sometimes reguires an additive) Hope this helps.

Rear gear ratio for 93 toyota 4x4 pickup 5 speed.

The C/Tr: C refers to the colour of the vehicle Tr refers to the interior colour A/TM is your transmission type. None of those numbers identify the rear end ratio.

What you need to do: Since you have to replace the rear end, yank it out. Examine the ring & pinion gears on the differential carrier. Mark on each a starting point, and count the teeth on both the ring & pinion gears. Now, after you have both totals of teeth, divide the # of teeth on the pinion by the number of teeth on the ring gear. Example: 12 teeth on the pinion, 46 teeth on the ring
12/46 = 3.83 ratio

How to set up the ring and pinion gear

The ring and pinion pattern shoud be in the center of the ring gear. You should have about 2 thousands back lash when properly set up. Paint the ring gear and check for your wear pattern. I use white paint myself and rotate the gear one full turn and check.
