The switch that controls the defrost, heater and vent settings have gone bad and needs to be replaced. Auto Zone should have that part or you can do the Salvage Yard for around $10.00. The switch that controls the setting has a diaphragm and when it fails, the vacuum from the air lines starts to make the sound you hear and there is not enough pressure to engage vent doors. It take about 20 min to replace from start to finish and your only going to remove two screws from the dash over the instrument panel, the trim panel around the stereo and climate control just clips in place. You don't have to remove the trim panel, it's to much of a pain. the climate control is held on by 4 bolts and the vent setting is held on by one bolt. Once you have the climate control panel unbolted from the dash, disconnect the vent control vacuum lines and then replace the vent control switch. Once replaced, put everything back together in reverse the way you took it apart. Good luck and check that the new vent control works before you put everything back together, just be take caution when you have the engine running to check.

98 Jimmy throws out heat but won't switch to all vent options

Your going to have to replace the switch. The switch it self may have gone bad, since it works on a vacuum. It's common for the diaphragm in the switch assembly to go bad, if it's not the switch. Then it's going to be a bad actuator door and will need to be freed up. I have found it to be the switch it self get dirty and the vacuum needed to activate the actuator door is not there.

Good luck and keep me posted. When you turn the switch from defrost to heater, do you hear a air leak??? If you do then it's a good chance that it's the switch it self.

I have a 1998 GMC jimmy heating problem. it blows out cold air we fixed the thermostat and the dile. what could be the prob

If everything else is working properly, then there might be air in the system. Bleed the air out via the heater hose at operating temp.

1998 Olds Aurora, no heat, no air, just blowing air out the front

i beleive these are a vacuum system. if air temp is in cold position you will get no heat. listen for hissing noise with motor turned off but key on. if you hear hissing noise you have a hose broken or off. you will have to find it

All heat no freash air or air con.

you may have a broken door in to the housing, blocking the cool air and allowing just the flow of hat air

1998 GMC Jimmy SLT warm air only from heating ducts

if you claim that your heater core is flushed properly then my bet is the temp regulator is bad.
