Question about 1981 Chevrolet Corvette

Suspension problem on 81 corvette

I have an 81 corvette and it leans lower on the drivers side by a quarter inch. I replaced the rear mono spring, shocks and body mounts and nothing fixed the problem. I tried to adjust the mono spring to even the ride height out. As I adjust the passenger spring bolt to raise the car, only the passenger side lifts as expected, but as I adjust the drivers spring bolt to raise the car, both sides lift and thats not expected. I've had this problem for years and no mechanic that I brought it to can figure out the problem, can you PLEASE help me figure out this problem. Thank you for your help.

    i have this issue on an 81, 9 leaf metal spring. First..be sure your rubber or poly bushes are sound and the same..cheap enuf to obtain new..recommend the poly. Use the optional 8 inch extra length outer spring bolt on the too hi side..adjust the nut downward lowers that side. use stock 6.5 inch outer spring bolt on left side, (th too low side)..titen nut up raises that side. May need a second or even third lower thick washer if you run out of threads. Measure at hi point of wheel arch from floor. (tip..its easier to adjust the nuts if you take just a little weiht off the sprin ends with a jack at outer ends..use a pad..and raise only a little...measure the body wheel arch..adjust with jack..move nut up/down once you have it close..final adjust when no jack..drive it a bit..a few turns..re-check..final adjust.

    by the way..also..first check that the spring leaves are "centered"..measure top most leaf each side..the center small bolt has a tiny bit of adjustment..maybe 1/8 in leaf side to side.

Just an idea, have you tried using spring blocks(rubber wedges) ?

Shock Absorber Replacement
Removal Procedure
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting
Remove the lower shock bolt.
For right side only, remove splash shield.
Remove the upper shock bolt.
Remove the shock from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
Install the shock to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Install the upper shock bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 110 Nm (81 ft. Lbs.).
For right side only, install splash shield
Install the lower shock bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 110 Nm (81 ft. Lbs.).
Lower the vehicle.

Brick wall crack


Check for rusted body parts,suspension mounts etc

May have to replace the springs

Shocks have nothing to do with ride height

Rear shocks (van 150000 miles) originals still on Recently installed 2.2 Legacy Engine people sugges KYB gas shocks I have Biltiens *new) on front


Bilsteins are about the best shocks you can buy.

With those miles (150000) on the van I would have also replaced all 4 springs and all 4 shocks., It is stupid to put new shocks on the front and leave worn out shocks on the rear . - The rear shock absorbers should also be replaced with new items.
(Springs are inexpensive to replace so I am surprised you did not renew them because it should be done. The old ones will have sagged significantly by now.)

REMOVE REAR SEAT AND PACKAGE SHELF TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE UPPER SHOCK ATTACHING NUTS.REMOVE UPPER ATTACHING NUTS. RAISE VECHICLE REMOVE REAR WHEEL AND SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK REMOVE LOWER SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING BOLT. REMOVE SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY FROM THE VECHICLE. COMPRESS THE COIL SPRING WITH THE PROPER SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL. REMOVE CENTER RETAINING NUT HOLDING THE UPPER MOUNTING INSULATOR. SLOWLY DECOMPRESS THE COIL SPRING.REMOVE THE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND THE COIL SPRING. REMOVE THE COIL SPRING. TO INSTALL COMPRESSED COIL SPRING ONTO THE STRUT ASSEMBLY. BE SURE TO THE END OF THE SPRING IS IN THE NOTCH ON THE LOWER SEAT.INSTALL UPPER MOUNTING INSULATOR. YOU WILL NEW LOCKNUT FOR THE CENTER RETAINING NUT OF THE COIL SPRING. Are struts on the front or back of this car?


The struts model (MacPherson Strut),are both in front and back of this car.

Of course this is only the cartridge, you have to transfer the spring, and the top mount of the existing strut. You need a pair of coil spring compressor to do the job. The basic procedure to replace a strut is:
Remove the top nuts that secure the strut assembly to the frame mount inside the engine compartment. Do not remove the center nut.
Mark the lower strut mounting location on the hub for installation reference. The alignment will be close if the new strut is installed in the same position.
Remove the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the hub.
Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
Mark the top mount for installation reference. Using a side mounted spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the top nut and retaining washer. Pull strut assembly out from the bottom of spring.
Slide the new strut assembly up into the spring and reposition the top mount onto the spring in the same position that it was removed. Install the retaining washer and top nut.
Tighten the top nut to the manufacturer's specifications and carefully remove the spring compressor.
Place the strut assembly back into the vehicle.

Car sitting lower than other side


The rear spring has weakened over time. Also, check that the Stabilizer link to the rear spring, on the left side hasn't broken. It's a bolt that goes down through the end of the bearing support, and attaches to the end of the spring. Sometimes the bolt rusts away, and breaks. The left front spring may be weak also. The car is 28 years old now. I have a 1976 Corvette, and customize Corvettes in my spare time.

I need to know how to get to the rear suspension (tower)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Spring Rear
Removal
  1. Position a hoist under the rear axle housing, and raise the vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 . Place jackstands under frame side rails.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Disconnect the lower studs of the two shock absorbers from the mounting brackets on the rear axle assembly .
  1. Unsnap the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) from RH upper arm retainer before lowering the rear axle assembly .
  1. Lower the hoist and axle housing until the rear springs are released.
  1. Remove rear spring and rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) from vehicle.

Shock Absorber Removal
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 1. To assist in removing the upper attachment on shock absorbers using a plastic dust tube, place an open end wrench on the hex stamped into the dust tube's metal cap. For shock absorbers with a steel dust tube, simply grasp the tube to prevent stud rotation when loosening the retaining nut.
  1. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut, washer, and insulator assembly from the stud on the upper side of the frame. Discard nut. Compress the shock absorber to clear the hole in the frame, and remove the inner insulator and washer from the upper retaining stud.
  2. Remove the self-locking retaining nut, and disconnect the shock absorber lower stud from the mounting bracket on the rear axle tube.
  3. Perform Shock Absorber Checks. Refer to Section 04-00 to determine shock absorbers performance.
Installation
  1. Properly prime the new shock absorber . Refer to Section 04-00 , Shock Absorber Checks.
  1. Place the inner washer and rear spring insulator (5536) on the upper retaining stud, and position the shock absorber so that the upper retaining stud enters the hole in the frame. While holding the shock absorber in this position, install a new rear spring insulator , washer and nut assembly on the upper side of the upper frame. Be sure to seat the rear spring insulator in the frame attaching hole. Tighten nut to 34-46 Nm (25-34 lb-ft).
  1. Extend the shock absorber , and place the lower stud in the mounting bracket hole on the rear axle assembly housing. Install a new self-locking retaining nut. Tighten nut to 76.5-103.5 Nm (56-76 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.

Refer to the illustration in Description and Operation. NOTE: To improve rear axle assembly noise and vibration concerns, the rear suspension should be fastened to the frame and rear axle assembly at the curb height position.
NOTE: If one rear suspension lower arm requires replacement, also replace the opposite rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Mark rear suspension shock absorber relative to protective sleeve with the vehicle in a static, level ground condition.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and place jackstands under the rear axle assembly . Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Lower the hoist until the shock absorbers are fully extended to relieve rear spring pressure.
  1. Support rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  1. Remove and discard the lower arm pivot bolt and nut from the axle bracket. Then, disengage the rear suspension lower arm from the bracket.
  1. Remove and discard the pivot bolt and nut from the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Raise the vehicle, and support the frame side rails with jackstands. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  2. Support the rear axle assembly .
  3. Lower the rear axle assembly , and support the rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  4. Unsnap parking brake rear cable and conduit from upper arm retainer.
  5. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the rear suspension arm and bushing to the rear axle assembly housing. Disconnect the rear suspension arm and bushing from the housing.
  6. Remove and discard the nut and bolt that secures the rear suspension arm and bushing to the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension arm and bushing . If upper arm rear bushing is to be replaced, use Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A and Rear Axle Control Arm Bushing Tools T86P-5638-AH and the following procedure:
  7. Place the upper arm rear bushing remover tool in position, and pull bushing out. Using Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A install bushing assembly into bushing ear of rear axle assembly.

Removal

Removal
  1. Remove front shock absorber-to-upper shock bracket nut and bolt.
  1. Disconnect the lower end of the front shock absorber bolt and nut from the U-bolt plate.
  1. Compress the front shock absorber and remove.
Installation
  1. Insert front shock absorber into the front shock absorber mounting bracket (18183). Insert bolt and tighten nut to 60-81 Nm (45-60 lb-ft).
  1. Attach the lower end of the front shock absorber to the U-bolt plate by installing the nut and bolt. Tighten to 60-81 Nm (45-60 lb-ft).

1998 Honda Passport 4wd - passenger side tilts or leans


There are Rubber Bushings Between the Frame and The Body that could be Worn out. You can get these at any Auto Parts Store or the Dealership. They can be Tough to replace though. If you are not Comfortable with this Repair, I would get them Replaced at a Mechanic or the Dealership. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

1995 Jag XJ6 Rear Issues...need to fix ASAP.


My 1994 Vanden Plas makes the same noise. I know I need rear shocks. You do also!! Have the rear shocks replaced. Bilstein part number B46 1858 or Koni part  number 30 1377. Actually the Bilstein is the better shock and less expensive.
