I have a 2000 tahoe with a 5.7 litre. On a long drive the engine light came on. When I continued to drive, it had a sound like the A/C kept drawing power from the engine but this was only intermittent and barely noticeable. The following day it started with trouble and then the next day it would not start; battery power is strong. Diagnosing the code from the digital reader comes up with a code P0440 which is a generic emmissions number. Any ideas where to go from here?

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly
With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

10 amp draw draining battery overnight on 99 tahoe

I have done this before, put about a 10 amp charger on the battery. Pull the courtesy light fuse first. Look at the battery charger, it is probably charging several amps, pull one fuse at a time. When the charging amps drops down you found the fuse the controls the problem. I had a car several years ago that someone pulled the seat belt all the way out, somehow it was pulling a load and draining the battery overnight.

The check engine light keeps coming on in my 2004 Chevy Tahoe. At first when it came on, it would show a warning message that states Reduced Engine Speed and the Tahoe wouldn't have any power. Now, it's...

Most auto parts stores have Scanners that can read the actual Codes causing the check engine light- usually for FREE. Google the Codes to determine what needs fixed.

Do not continue to drive it, as it may cause permanent damage!

My 97 tahoe only running on 6 cylinders

If compression test is good is either no spark, bad coil or wire, or no fuel, bad fuel injector. Need to clarify which is not functioning properly.
