The front hubs aren't locking. try replacing with WARN industries manual locking hubs. the auto hubs slip out a lot

2002 Kia Sportage 4X4 Just purchased. First big snow it seems the 4 Hi and 4 Low are not working as the front axle spins but the front wheels don't when I am stuck. Also is this vehicle rear wheel drive...

Best and cheapest to fix is to replace vacuum lockers with manual lockers. It is easy to do. Only 6 bolts per front wheel. This is the most trusted way of 100% engagement.

Goes in to four wheel drive but front tires are
Look at the back of the front wheels there is 2 black pipes, 1 for the brakes that conect to the brake unit (callipers) and the other one is the vacume pipe. Most of the time it is damaged. This pipe is softer and thinner than the brake pipe. It will have a inner pipe and outer sleeve (pipe) that is loose from the main pipe, just to prtect the inner pipe. It can have a leak under that sleeve. ENJOY from Willem Potchefstroom SA

This is a long/hard one to answer as a few things can cause this. First, check the vacuum lines running from the engine down to the front axles for cracks, and make sure you have vacuum to the axle hub. Second, remove and inspect the front wheel bearings, they should be set to proper preload and there should be no signs of water in the hub. And last if there is water in the hub, that most likely means there is rust on the front axle, and the pitting caused by the rust will not allow vacuum to build up and ingage the four wheel drive. the later requires a new front hub kit $$$.

there are vacum line one on each side behide the wheels see if they are broke or leaking i had the same problem

Shift into four wheel drive and nothing happens light says its in four wheel drive only back two tires work
Check for a vacuum leak under the hood. The four wheel drive front hubs are accuated by vacuum.

small vacum hose i replaced it twice and will have to do it again it seems to happen about every two years after five years of age
