IF the warning light is on, then there's a trouble code stored in the computer. Get the trouble code read. That's always the starting point in any diagnosis.
The light is on because something has malfunctioned in the transmission system, this can be a sensor or wiring or the transmission has a mechanical fault. The next step is to have a scanner hooked up and read the fault code that was set in the control modules memory when it turned on the warning light. This may require a trip to the local dealer.
This is NOT a Tyre pressure sensor warning!

It is a fault associated with the drivetrain which includes from the injectors on the engine to the transmission and possibly just a sensor malfunction.
There are multiple errors possible with this fault.
Requires a diagnostic OBD2 port analysis of the ECU to clear the fault codes and further analysis.
Hi Deborah, What light is coming on? If your vehicle has a clutch it is not automatic and I don't know of any manual gearbox fitted with a warning light. Please describe the light which is coming on. better still take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and have the technician identify the fault(s) Regards John
Hello and welcome to fixya.com turned on by the systems computer it is to alert you to the fact that the computer module has detected a fault in the systems operation, this can be the engine, the emissions system or the transmission. What must be done now is to have the system scanned for fault codes, these are called OBD2 fault codes, then diagnostics are performed to determine the cause of the fault codes and repair made based on the diagnostics performed.
a flashing mil (malfunction indicate lamp) means the computer has detected a misfire. whether random or specific, you'll have to get the code read. autozone, aamoco do it for free
This means that the Powertrain Control Module or computer has detected a fault in either the ignition system,fuel delivery system,emission system,or even possibly the automatic transmission (if equipped).
As long as the light is on steady this means that the fault is still there but the computer is still able to control it by substituting a signal. If it starts flashing this means that computer can no longer control it and damage will possibly occur if you continue to drive it.
You need to have someone hook a scan tool to it to determine what fault codes are present to determine what system has malfunctioned.
