Vw transporter 2l 99 model. When i turn the key the dash lights come on but the engine is silent. Push starting the car works fine. does this sound like a starter motor or ignition problem... ? cheers dave
Need to check the main wires try putting a jump lead on the pos battery and then to strter to to see if it turns over if does then some thing wrong with wiring

you forgot to say it cranks fast or not?
jumper cables starts work,???
dash lights means the whole IP cluster is dead?
all warning lamps dead. and fuel level dead.
key on? key on cluster runs self test every day for 29years all that deead?
no car starts (but min) if it will not crank. fast..
mine push starts(M/T) box.
IP dead is fuse blown (if lucky)
best I can do blind and deaf,
start a post of all that works and does not both.

say first, I key on and IMMO is not unhappy
and key turned to start, the starter is dead
as silent or only clicks

hi there if you remove the cam pully wich drives the diesel pump you will see a key way in the end of the cam turn the engine untill the key way is flat ( i use a streight edge in the keyway and turn until it is level with the top of the cylinder head ROCKER COVER REMOVED once this is aligned up there is a mark o the back of the diesel pump pully thiss aligns up with a groove between two castings on the side of the pump at the front of the engine once all these are aligned up you can put on the belt ( it may ot start right away this wil be due to needing to bleed up the fuel ONLY IF PUMP BEEN REMOVED and bleeding up the fuel can be a right pain. hope thos helps ben
That would be your Ignition switch my friend, happens to most the vw's within their 200k mile life span. if you turn the key and it doesn't start, try (as you have the key engaged to start the engine) lightly leaning the key up, down, left, right, sideways, which ever way possible, or even pushing the key its self into the ignition as far as it will go, if its the ignition switch, the car will most likely start. Now, for saftey reasons i will tell you not to drive the car once you do get it started, for the only problem i had with doing that was as i was driving down the road, the started engaged when ever i would push the clutch in, so i had to resort to "speed shifting", and something like that could lead to an accident. if you bring it to a local repair shop it shouldnt cost you more the $100 to fix.
Well if your alternator light is on. seems like you need a new alternator. if it has crapped out it would be the reason why youre car doesnt start. its not a terribly hard fix. but i would say that is probably the reason why it wont start.
Hi there have you checked the 35amp fuse if ok you chould connect the starter motor direct "make sure its out of gear "and see if the starter turns. also a wee bit more info on the fault ??does the engine turn ??
