Power Steering fluid is what's needed. not oil. The fluid is generic, no special mix for a certain make or model.

I couldn't recommend one over another because of anything special it does. There is no Deluxe Power Steering Fluid that will help you steer twice as good as the leading competitor.

Have a good one Brian

    Hello again Brian,

There are quite a few liquids that a vehicle needs to operate, aren't there?

Here's a cheat sheet of what goes where, You'll find Very Helpful:

    • Power Steering Pump - Power Steering Fluid - Generic

    • Brakes - Brake Fluid - Generic

    • Engine - Oil - specific to engine

    • Automatic Transmission - ATF - Some have special needs, stamped on dipstick
If I may ask, are you just doing routine maintenance? Is there a problem?

    Tip: You mentioned ATF, so....
If you are checking fluid levels in an automatic transmission, the vehicle should be on a level surface, the engine needs to be running with the transmission in Park or Neutral.

Also, be absolutely sure about where you are pouring what. If there is the slightest doubt, don't. I'm trying to save you some headaches here.

LMH? Not sure what that is in reference to.

If you have more questions, I should be on for another hour or so.

And now a request from me, How about an upgrade on that rating?

    Best regards,

BTW, If your vehicle has a standard transmission, NO ATF, NONE. ok?

    Remember, when in doubt, ask.

Trying to look out for ya

Abnormal exhaust smoke

definitely an oil consumption problem. How many miles? Could be worn rings and or valve guides. The oil light on when hot indicates low level or possible or weak oil pump. Check compression for possible head gasket or cracked head. I wouldn't drive it untill diagnosed.

I own an Audi A4 1.8T 1996. i have a problem of refilling the fluid into the transmission. can any of you tell me how to fill it?

there are two plugs on transmission oil pan, the smaller one to fill and the bigger one to check ( near the edge ). you must bring your car to a service station to do this, because you have to lift your car up evenly.

1996 Audi A4. On a very cold morning the power steering fluid overflows from the resevoir.

Check up the hydraulic power steering pump.
See picture below for 1.6, 1.8 liters Audi (4 cyl.) engines:
If you find leaks and noise when runing, the hydraulic vane type pump is damaged. The pump **** air inside and mix air with oil resulting foam. Therefore fluid volume inside steering instalation rises. Then pressure overflows oil from the reservoir. You need repair or replace hydraulic vane type steering pump.

I do not have the owners manual for my 1996 audi a4. I get an error on the dash that flashes 'In 2'. The oil light also comes on sometimes. Any ideas?

Try this link for a free manual:-

Check the oil level is ok, change the oil if it hasn't been recently done.
Check operation of the oil press alarm sensor,
Check the oil pressure - using an independant oil pressure gauge if in doubt.
