SINCE 50,000k's I have experienced what feels like a slack cv-joint (vw aust showed little interest in solving the issue) - now at 160,000k's it's really uncomfortable on and off the throttle in traffic. how many cv-joints would the 4motion have? would any one in particular be more prone to failure? is there a recommended method of testing individual cv-joints in-situ? and could there be any other likely cause of such a symptom? suggestions and advice gratefully received AG - Sydney Australia

Usually when the CV axles start going out they will make a clicking noise when turning sharply in one direction or another. If you hear the noise while turning left, most likely the left axle, same for the reverse. Sorry, I don't know how many that particular vehicle has.

How to fix a cv joint on 98 ford escort

Unless you're fully set up with an engineering workshop with all appropriate machinery you cannot repair a CV Joint, you are far better off buying a replacement CV Joint and having it fitted. Unless you know what you're doing and you re-tension everything correctly you are likely to have a wheel fall off your vehicle. If you're interested in learning how to do this type of work, maybe you could do a night class at a local Technical college. Some colleges even allow students to work on their own vehicles as part of the learning process.

2000 VW Passat 4 cylider turbo automatic- motor seems to shake when switching from drive to reverse and vice versa.

Check motor mounts, check CV joints both of thees issues can cause the engine to stutter or shake the other possibility is a fault in the overdrive system of the transmit ion
if you have overdrive . also engin idle should be about 500 to 700 rpm normal any higher will case an abruptness .

Grinding when I turn

The tie rod end.

Those were also notorious for ball joint problems. With vehicle sitting level, grasp the front tire at each side and push with one hand while pulling with the other- alternating which one you are pushing- this will reveal the play in the tie rod ends on that side of the vehicle. Then grab the top of the tire and push then pull rapidly- this should show you approximately how much wear there is on the upper ball joint. Liikely a great deal.

It is probable the lower ball joint is original, and if more than 120 thousand miles- it likely will not hurt to replace them as well.

It is a job you can do at home, or you can have it done at most better shops. You may also want to consider replacing the sway bar links as well. As the truck approaches 200,000 miles, these parts all have seen their feir share of abuse and use.

If you have 4 wheel drive- inspect the drive shaft boots. if they show any singns of leakage, that CV joint is likley needing replacement- it at least need to be removed, cleaned and inspected. These can make noise on turns as well. The outer CV joint more often than the inner.

Could it be a bad u joint even if there is no slack in it ? i cralwed under it and shook the driveshaft and did not feel any slack.

If a U-joint is binding due to corrosion or lack of lubrication, you probably won't feel any slack in it. You need to remove the drivehaft and check the U=joints for binding. They should move very smoothly and easilly.

How do I change the CV joints on a 1.8TD Ford Escort P reg

Hi mate

With the driveshaft removed from the vehicle.

Undo the the retaining straps on the CV boot.

Pull the CV boot up the driveshaft a little way, enough so you can clean all the old grease away.

Now look into the CV joint an locate the circlip that locks the CV to the driveshaft.

Now put the driveshaft into a vice with the CV joint facing downwards.

Now open the circlip and at the same time strike the CV joint. You can do this with a ballpin hammer if you are scrapping the CV joint. You can get a helper to stike the CV joint with a hammer while you keep the circlip open.

This will release the CV joint form the drive shaft.

Now clean the driveshaft of any old grease and fit a new CV boot if needed.

Now reverse the driveshift in the vice and fit the new CV joint. It will tap on with no trouble but do not damage it. Test it is on by trying to pull it off with your hands.

Now fill it with new grease.

Fit the CV boot to the CV joint and secure it to the CV joint.

Now it is ready to refit to your vehicle.

I trust this solves the problem for you.

Ray
