This noise is caused by a noisy clutch throw-out/release bearing, that is the part that presses against the pressure plate and disengages the clutch disk, the transmission must be removed to replace this part, so it is best to replace the clutch assembly at the same time, the labor for both is the same, about 5 hours

Either the throw out bearing, or the pilot bearing needs to be replaced.

Hi, the noise you hear is going to be with the thrust bearing that opperates the clutch.

When you buy a clutch kit you get the clutck plate, the pressure plate, and the thrust bearing in the kit so you dont need to buy them seperate.

If your going to replace the thrust bearing its best you replace the whole clutch kit as if the thrust bearing is noisy then the chances are your clutch is on its way out also as this puts extra strain on the thrust bearing as it has to move further than it does when the clutch is new.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

SOURCE: I just replaced the clutch

the lay shaft bearings inside the gearbox are worn, remove level plug and pump a grease gun full of grease into gearbox as this will help quieten it ,

Clutch noise

This noise may come from the clutch diaphragm which stops working when the pedal is depressed. The clutch disk might be slipping.

Engine knock noise evident when idling, noise disappears with clutch depressed. what could this be? throw-out bearing of clutch (new clutch put in car 9 months ago) crank shaft?

If it goes away when you depress the clutch it is most probably the throw out bearing-if it were related to the crank or rear main bearing you would hear it all the time.

What?! Really! The noise goes when the clutch pedal is depressed! So the noise goes when the release bearing (throw-out bearing) is engage? So how would that be a release bearing/clutch problem? If it didn't make a noise until the clutch pedal was depressed, it would be the release bearing! In other words its the input shaft bearing and/or counter shaft bearing in the gearbox. Stop giving people bad advice

No sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i think the fingers on the clutch are worn to excess and when the clutch is depressed fully the bearing is going through the fingers of the clutch causing the noise you can hear .Eventualy it will need a new clutch which is not expensive if you do it yourself

It must be the first motion shaft bearing, the clutch thrust would be noisy and slow the tick over when you depress the clutch if it was faulty. If the car has ever been left standing the first motion shaft bearing can dry out and rust a bit then go noisy with use, does it growl in use?

Gearbox

That will be your clutch release bearing. It should be ok, if noisy for a while but make sure you change it with the next clutch assembly change.
