Check the latch and see if it has been tripped closed some how.look at the front doors and see what a open latch looks like and try to unlatch the rear one by holding the open lever down and trying to move the latch jaws open with your fingers or screwdriver.then spray with some oil.

Liftgate removal on 2006 escape

You just need to remove the gate inside trim panel. Do not pull the entire gate off. Watch the video and yes the procedure is the same for the 2006 models Ford Escape LiftGate Lock Actuator Replacement

2003 Envoy liftgate doesn't latch properly

I don't think the piece of rubber has anything to do with the functionality of the latch itself it usually there for keeping the latch quiet like no rattle or metal noise on the road.
Hope it helps

Interior lights will not turn off

get in vehicle and make sure all doors are closed and liftgate and liftgate glass are closed turn on ignition and see if warning of door ajar is on .if so then one of the door ajar switchs are stuck. purchase a can of PB BLASTER available at your local auto parts store and lube all latch assembleys on vehicle then open and close all doors 10 to 15 times this will usually free up the stuck switch. note spray the latch assembleys really good so it will reach the switch which is hidden in the latch.
