I have a '96 Tracker lsi. After driving a few miles today it started losing power, smoke was rising from around the engine and making a ratteling noise. I checked the oil, transmission and radiator fluids--all fine and the gages showed it wasn't running hot. AT one point it stalled out but after sitting for 20 minutes it started right up and ran fine for a few more miles--long enough to get me home thank the powers that be. Any ideas? Thanks.

maybe ur cadlatic coverter is going out u can take it to a muffler shop and some wont charge u to look at it . some times u can to if ur center floor board gets really hot
Check the spark plug leads and spark plug, it may be putting too much fuel in the engine and not enough spark or power to ignite it leading to lower economic driving, also make sure you get the timing checked as this can set it off.
Make sure there is no black smoke coming out of the engine. It will be losing a slight amount of power from somewhere where it is either combustion related or even something simple like the aircon unit.
Your not running with A/C on? this saps enough power from the car
distributor module.... any recent tune-ups? e.g= cap,rotor,wires,plugs? parts are reasonably priced and labor should be around 1 hour... start there...
Well, billowing white smoke from the tailpipe is generally antifreeze burning off in the engine, which would indicate either a blown head gasket into a cylinder or a broken fluid passage. In the old days there was a way an automatic transmission could leak trans fluid into the engine and create white smoke too, but that shouldn't apply to your vehicle. Not certain about the noises, but clearly you have some internal damage. You can check the antifreeze level to see if you have lost fluid. You can pull the spark plugs to see if you notice damage to the plugs or deposits on the plugs indicating antifreeze.
Yes , power steering fluid will smoke if it gets on a hot engine, especially on any part of the exhaust system. Barring anything else wrong with the engine such as a coolant leak, and the engine running OK otherwise, I would say that the smoke is from power steering fluid dripping or getting blown on the exhaust by the fan.
Is the check engine light on? Any more specific info like year, make, model, what color the smoke is, how many miles, etc........ This could help to narrow down the problem other than the smoke which all diesels do with quick acceleration. You might get a quicker answer if you are more detailed!
