9 out of 10 times this problem arises when a wheel speed sensor goes bad or a corresponding tone ring breaks. the abs light may not come on, and there will be no code in the abs control module in this situation. but what happens is the tone ring goes around an axle or is part of a wheel hub. and it's got slots in it that "excite" the sensor. if there is a crack in a tone ring, it'll work properly most of the time but intermittently will make the abs module think that wheel is spinning at a different speed than the others, making the abs kick on.

When I apply the brake at slower speeds the pedal starts pulsating like the anti lock brake is kicking on .it doesn't do all the time but is starting to do it more frequently.

You may be at the end of the life for your brakes and or rotor / drum. If you can take it to a brake shop they usually will look at it for free.

Is it icy or snowy where you live? Sounds like anti-lock brakes kicking in... Can you freel it in your foot?

When i try to stop in the snow or rain my brakes kick back and make a funny noise and i can't stop at all. only when i use booth feet

Those are your anti-lock brakes. Either there is a malfunction, or you are applying to much brake for the road conditions, which is causing the anti-lock brakes to activate. If the road conditions are slick and hazardous, slow down and start stopping sooner.

Could be a couple of things.

1. How worn are your tires? Badly worn tires can cause the sensors to detect a skid much earlier.

2. One or more of the ABS sensors need replacing.

3. The ABS computer is bad.

A shop will need to check the wheel speed sensors, maybe one is reading "0" and the ABS thinks the wheel is locking up, when its not.

ABS stands for anti-lock brakes. Without going into a long explanation, when a vehicles brakes lock up, meaning the wheels are no longer rolling, a vehicile begins to slide and the driver cannot control where it slides.

To combat this, drivers were taught to pump their brakes so the tires could get some grip to the road to steer. With ABS, a computer does the pumping for you, much faster than you could ever respond, thus allowing you to steer around a hazard.

With ABS systems, in an emergency situation, you should apply the brakes firmly, and hold them, allowing the ABS to kick in. Do NOT pump the brakes, the biggest complaint from the people who investigate wrecks is that drivers tend to not apply the brakes as firmly as they need to.

You can probably google anti lock brakes systems and get some very good explanations woth more details.

I had the same problem with my 97 Suburban & replaced all the same stuff before i found out what really was wrong. it turned out to be a front wheel bearing. my abs would kick on at low speeds under 10 mph right before completly stopping. there is an electrical sensor in the wheel bearing that was malfunctioning creating the illusion the wheels were about to lock up therefore kicking on the abs. now all you have to do is figure out which wheel bearing is the source of your problems. if i were a betting man, i would stack my chips on this solution. good luck.

Anti lock brakes activation

if abs activates when it should not,,, it means abs module senses one or more wheel sensores under 3 mph and the other sensores are above 3 mph. .the cause of this is usualy a bad wheel speed sensor or excessive air gap between the sensor and ringwheel. you need an abs data scanner to hook up and go for a test drive to find out which sensor is the culprit.

that is what it is desgined to do - reduce acceleration and apply the brakes intermittently when the wheels spin. You have a switch you cn push to disable it. You need to disable each time you start car. See owner manual.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Traction Control System The optional traction control system is designed to control wheel spin when accelerating on slippery or loose surfaces. Traction control system is available only with anti-lock brakes. The traction control system includes the following components:
  • Hydraulic control unit.
  • Throttle control actuator (9N825).
  • Traction control switch.
  • Traction control warning indicator.
  • Front brake anti-lock sensor (2C204).
  • Rear brake anti-lock sensor (2C190).
The traction control system operates as follows:
  • System functions by transferring torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with the most traction.
  • This is achieved by applying the brake at the spinning wheel through the hydraulic control unit or reducing the throttle opening.
  • Traction control braking and throttle control occur at vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h (30 mph).
  • At vehicle speeds above 50 km/h (30 mph), only throttle limiting control is used.
  • If speed control is operating when traction control system engages the traction control system will disengage speed control through the use of a speed control relay. This action is the same as applying the brake pedal with speed control engaged.
