Check the oil when the engine is cold. Make sure it's at the correct level.

========================

The Positive Crack Valve (PCV) is partial blocked.

This is under $10 item. You should change it.

The location of the PCV is on the top (or near top) of the valve cover.

Replace it and the oil/smoke will reciculate back to the correct path (back to the valve cover).

Nissan maxima 2000. Oil dipstick level shows too high. Regular oil changes done and filter with proper amount added. White smoke alerted me to recheck things. Only thing I found was dipstick shows oil

If the oil level goes up, something has to be leaking into the engine oil pan.
That would either be gasoline from the injectors or coolant from the radiator. If you are not adding coolant, it could be a leaking injector.

Are there any particular tricks to changing the oil in my XC 90?

Hi,

You need to get the front end of the vehicle up - on ramps or stands or whatever you have - but ensure it is secure.

Run the engine until the oil is hot - either take it for a run for a while before you start the job or run it for 20 minutes to warm up..

Once the vehicle is up -- you will need to remove the shield that is covering the bottom of the engine - remove the fittings and drop it down. Some have a hole that you can work through but not all.

Then locate the sump plug. This is a bolt head item right in the bottom of the engine.. Have a bucket ready - remove the plug and let the oil run out until it stops running.Be careful, the oil may be hot.

When that done - refit the plug tight - Then you may want to replace the oil filter - you didn't mention that. The oil filter is the canister on the side of the engine - they get tight and there are special tools you can buy from car shops to get them off.So, if you are doing that - have your bucket ready as when you take it off ( unscrew it ) it will drop oil out. Let that drain again, then get your new filter - smear a film of nee engine oil on the rubber seal - then screw the filter on - hand tight only - but tight as you can get it.

Then all you need to do - is refit the panel - and fill the engine with oil. Your handbook - or the shop where you buy the oil, will tell you exactly how much it takes or go off the dipstick. If you do go off the dipstick - remember after you have initially started the engine again, you will need to turn it off - let the engine stand for 10 minutes - then top up with a bit more oil - checking the dipstick each time.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

How do i fill my transmission in my 2005 chevy silverado?

First, park vehicle on level ground, and leave engine running. Pop hood, look at the right rear of the engine compartment very near the engine, and you will see two dipsticks. The yellow one is engine oil; the red one is the transmission fluid.
With engine running and in park, and standing on the right side of the truck, not in front (to avoid moving parts), flip up the handle of the red dipstick (this is the dipstick lock), and withdraw the dipstick straight out of the fill tube. Wipe the dipstick off with a clean cloth, and carefully so as not to bend it (even if it is the cable type dipstick), re-insert it into the fill tube all the way to the bottom. Withdraw the dipstick again, slowly this time, and support the last six inches or so of it with your other hand as it comes free of the tube, and observe the fluid leverl on the dipstick. If the fluid level shows in the normal range, put the dipstick back in, and flip the lock back down; you're done. If it shows low, put a paper transmission fluid funnel (the kind with the strainer built in at the bottom) into the opening of the dipstick tube and slowly, adding no more than one pint at a time, pour fresh transmission fluid from a new container into the transmission. Recheck the fluid level after each pint of fluid. Repeat this operation until the proper fill level is reached.
All of this is done with the engine running.

I want to change my own oil where can I get information how to do that?

any parts store can help with information.

I will give you step by step too.

1. raise hood and remove oil cap
2. chock wheels so car will not roll backward over you.
3. place drain pan under oil pan and remove plug from bottom of oil pan.
4. after oil has drained out slie pan under oil filter and remove oil filter.
5. dip finger in quart of oil and rub oil on ruber gasket on new oil filter.
6. fill new oil filter with oil if it is not sideways when installed.
7. install new oil filter and replace oil pan drain plug.
8. install recommended amount of oil for your vehicle, usually 5-6 quarts.
9. remove dipstick, whipe clean, re-install dipstick, remove again and make sure sufficient oil is in pan.
10. note mileage so you can do it again 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Coolant light comes on

Ouch. Been down that road.

Sounds to me like a head gasket problem.

Pull your oil dipstick.

Is your oil watery?

Does your dipstick smell like coolant?

Does your coolant have an oily film on it?

You can have a dye leak test done to confirm it.

Should you be able just to have the head gaskets changed and not the engine, again..insist on thenewest, brand name, top of the line gaskets
available.

Best of luck.

Hyundai accent engine oil consumption

Hi ..... With this milage I'd expect at the same time the following would have been done, valve seals changed, valve guides checked/replaced, bores honed and valves reground into the cylinder head. Not to have done any of these is false economy and bad engineering practice.
The symptoms you state, esp'ly on topping up, point towards valve seals or guides.
Take the plugs out and examine, they should all be a light tan. Carryout a compression test across the bores and come back with the results.
