The engine does have to be raised. The bolts are not easy to get to until the engine is lifted and the engine mount is removed. I'm doing this job right now and the book time is around 5 hours.

No, the oil pan is at the bottom of the engine and the bolts are easy to get to. If you are going to do this yourself, make sure you have a support for the pan when you undo all the bolts...make sure you drain the oil out of the pan before trying to drop the pan...when you have installed the new gasket and are ready to put it back together make sure you tighten the bolts in "star" pattern; that methd is much like the pattern you use when bolting a wheel back on the car...this ensures an even torque all the way around the pan. Hope this helps!

the bolts are not easy to get to and the engine has to be raised to get the motor mount bracket out of the way. whoever designed this thing should be made to remove about 3 of them, in a driveway when the wind is blowing 20 mph and the temperature is right about 40 degrees F.

The oil pan gasket job on that car is about 5 hours book time. The motor has to be lifted up to remove the motor mount attached to the oil pan.

2005 Impala LS 3.8 ocassionally shifts/bumps after stopping and restarting. Random, and can't reproduce on demand. Only 45,ooo miles. I just had the trams fluid replaced to find out if this was...

I don't think it's anything major. Did you change the filter when you changed the fluid? Lots of time this will fix shifting issues. Also you can get some Lucas transmission treatment, it works pretty good. A filter change and treatment should fix it. The filter is pretty easy to change. You need to pull the trans oil pan off and remove the filter. Some of em just slip in, while others are bolted in. Then just put it all back together. Make sure you get the filter kit, which comes with a new pan gasket. Before you put the new gasket on, make sure to remove all traces of the old gasket. The bolts on the oil pan don't need to be over tightened, just get em snug. Hope this helps

I want to know how change my oil pan gasket.

The oil pan gasket is a complex task. Due to the design of the Northstar engine,ie the exhaust crossunder exhaust pipe either the engine has to be removed from the car or remove the transmission.... The oil pan is a two piece assembly. Upper and lower. Yhank you

How do I replace the oil pan gasket on a 2001 GMC Yukon XL?

Changing the oil pan gasket on a GMC Yukon XL is realtively simple, but does require removal of the exhaust pipe. You will need a new oil pan gasket and a new exhaust pipe flange gasket.
Put the car on ramps or jacks to access the undercarriage.
Remove the exhaust pipe by removing the 3 nuts holding the exhaust pipe flange to the exhaust manifold. These nuts often rust and prior application of penetrating oil may be required to remove them without damage. Once the pipe is unbolted, work the exhaust system loose from the hanging brackets. In most cases the entire system does not have to be removed since there is enough room to remove the pan with only the front hangers removed.
Drain the oil from the engine
Remove the 10 mm bolts holding the pan to the block.
Remove the old gasket material and scrape any remaining gasket from the block and pan.
Install the new gasket. Forma-Gasket or a similar product may be used in small quantities to "glue" the new gasket in place and prevent shifting while the pan is reattached to the block.
Reinsall the 10 mm bolts in a cross pattern to ensure the gasket is compressed evenly. Do not overtighten the bolts.
Replace the pipe to flange gasket between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold with a new part.
Reattach the exhuast pipe to the hangers.
Install the 3 bolts connecting the pipe flange to the exhaust manifold.
Fill the engine with oil.
