Had the same problem. I just replaced the brake booster unit, had a vaccuum leak out of where the push rod goes in. Solved.

The hissing noise is not important. The pedal to the floor is.They do not have any thing to do with one another. The pedal to floor can be,a leak some where,so check all four wheels for fluid leakage. Then check the master cylinder for leakage, and if the reservoir to see if it is empty,or almost empty. If there is no fluid lose at all,and the reservoir is at the right level,or close, then remove the rear brake drums, and inspect the shoes,to see if they are worn out.If they are o k,on both rear wheels, then put the drums back on.Adjust the rear brake shoes to where the brake drums drag on the shoes ,and just a little more.Do not adjust to tight. You need to be able to turn the drums without a whole lot of effort.O k.now if the brake pedal does not come back up,then change the master cylinder out with a new one,or a new remanufacture. This should fix ya,let us know if it does help you, please.Thank you.

What are symptoms for bad brake booster on 1998 Dodge Ram 1500?

Hard brake pedal when applied with the engine running. A quick test for the vacuum assist booster is to shut off engine, pump brake pedal 3 or 4 times and hold on the last pump, start engine and see if pedal drops a bit....if you detect a problem with booster you should check for adequate engine vacuum supply to booster when idling . You can sometime hear a hissing or air leaking when applying brake pedal with engine running if booster is defective

Why when I step on brake an hear hissing noise under dash?

If nobody has helped you yet.....I have 2 things that are possible; 1st is the vacumn assist booster, while it sits in the engine side of the firewall your brake pedal is connected to it, it serves to 'amplify' your pedal pressure. A vacumm leak into the cab compartment may cause the hiss and the inconsistency in the way the brakes grab. The second may be a cruise control switch the earlier ones were controlled by vacumm but I do not know when they switched to electronic controls but this would have nothing to do with the break 'grab'. Best of luck.

Hissing brakes

IT is probably a vacuum leak in the brake booster. With the pedal going to the floor There is either no brake fluid or you will have to bleed the system. Replace the booster and bleed the brakes starting at the longest line first

1995 dodge ram 1500 2 wd, replaced front brake pads, pedal goes to the floor, no air in lines, found leak, apperas to be halfway back, above fuel tank... What's back there that is causing a leak? Only thin...

Hi There.
could be a weak spot in the brake line and has popped when you pushed the pistons back on the brake calipers, (had a similar problem on my toyota previa) only thing you can do is replace brake line and bleed brakes. make sure that there is no build up of road dirt on top of the tank, and check for stone damage incase something got thrown up from the road..
Good Luck.
