SOURCE: fuel pump

Hi I am Vortash you do seem to be having a few problems with this one , and it does sound a little like the fuel pump and ther is an easy way to check you are getting adequate pressure from the pump .. without a pressure meter .. take a small balloon ( you know the type hard to blow small and can cause you to bust a blood vessel trying to inflate them ideal for this ) place it over the end of the fuel pipe and tape it on tight .. remove the lead from the ignition coil so the vehicle will not start .. crank the vehicle and watch the ballon if it starts to inflate then the Pressure is fine . now dont forget this ballon will now be full of gasoline when you remove it so dont break it and have a bowl or. bucket handy .. and when you take it off also remember there is going to be a good deal of pressure in it ?.
Ok so if the ballon inflated the pump is ok if id didnt insist the garage do a fuel pressure test .
I have a cousin who works for Ford here in the UK it is 2.40 am in the morning here now so I will ask him tomorow or later today lol as I have heard of a fault like this before and it was not the fuel system but i want to check with him first .. Regards Vortash

Check to see if there's a vacuum leak at the base gasket. Let it idle and spray a little carburetor cleaner around the base. If the idle goes up, the spray is sealing the leak momentarily. If it's getting too much air, it's the same as not getting enough fuel.

What causes it to "flutter"?

My best guess is plugs and/or plug wires, carb or distributor/points. If you haven't changed plugs, wires or points since '86, you are lucky it runs at all. Additionally, could be a crack in the distributor or problems with the coil wire.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

I have a 86 ford f-250 w/ a carbed 460.no fuel to carb. was told i had very low oil pressure.would changing oilpump and assending unit fix my propblem? do i have to pull motor to change oilpump? what...

If you're not getting fuel to the carburetor, check/change your fuel filter, check the fuel pump. And for the oil pressure you can change the oil pressure sending unit to see if thats the problem, for the oil pump the oil pan has to come off, it can be changed without pulling the engine, however you still have to lift the engine up.

Have to Pump accelerator repeatedly to start after sitting

Check the choke, with cold engine open throttle all the way and let go, butterfly on top should be open about1/4", also I would check your accelerater pump diaphragm sit in the carb. look in carb. pump throttle and see if you see gas spray, if you do pump diaphragm is good, if none bad diaphragm

My 86 f250 460 engine has hard time starting; New fuel filter, rebuilt carb, new plugs, new dist cap and rotor... i have to pump a few times, crank,,,, pump some more and then crank again for it to start

Check the choke in the carb, might stay stuck in the open position when engine cools down. After the engine is cold, check and see if the choke is closed, if not close it by hand, and see if that works.
