2002 pontiac montana van ''service engine soon'' light

Had checked out at my local auto zone store. Code came up as P0410 Secondary Air Injection System fault. Probable cause - Circuit relay defective or fuse open. Check connector and wiring. Air pump defective or fuses blocked. Is vehicle safe to drive without causing any further damage until I have opportunity to get it fixed? What exactly does air injection system do?

Diagnostic Aids

  • Low system airflow can cause an intermittent complaint. Inspect for the following conditions:
    • Any restriction in the exhaust system that may produce back pressure
    • Pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking pipes, hoses, or fittings
    • A restricted pump inlet hose, duct, or filter
    • Pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking vacuum lines
    • Heat damage
  • A short to voltage in the pump relay control circuit can result in the AIR pump running continuously with the ignition OFF by back-feeding to ground. This will eventually result in pump failure.
  • An AIR pump that had become inoperative and had shown indications of having exhaust gases in the outlet port would indicate check valve failure.
  • Notice Do not operate the AIR pump for more than 60 seconds. Continuous operation of the AIR pump in excess of 60 seconds will damage the AIR pump.

    If the DTC cannot be duplicated and is determined to be intermittent, reviewing the Failure Records data can be useful in determining when the DTC was last set. Also refer to Intermittent Conditions

If the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light is on, then the computer has detected and stored a trouble code ( DTC) and you need an OBD II code reader. the connection should be on the drivers side under the dash on the inside of the vehicle. In some states the local auto parts store will do this for free.

Service Engine Soon light came on. Took the car to Auto Zone the code P0410 popped up. What does this mean?
This is a secondary air system malfunction code.....

The Secondary Air System pumps outside fresh air into the Exhaust System during cold engine start up. This additional air helps burn up the highly rich exhaust emissions that are produced when the engine is warming up. The Secondary Air System typically has an Air Pump and some tubes or plumbing to route the air. The system also has a solenoid and Check Valve(s) to control the air flow.

Common Problems That Trigger the P0410 Code
  • Defective Check Valve(s)
  • Faulty Air Pump or Air Pump Relay
  • Faulty air control solenoids or vacuum lines
  • System may be restricted or plugged

I have 2004 Pontiac Montana. And I find that the air bag light stays on always.
Its probably telling you that your airbag unit needs replacement. They do lose their charge over time- check at your local dealership and have the code pulled. Or if your mechanically inclined go to your local auto store and rent a code scanner yourself. Most major chains will let you use one for free.

Check engine light on, diagnostic code 0128 and 0410 keep coming up
P0128 - Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
(has to do with exhaust system)

Note: There is a technical service bulletin (TSB) regarding code P0410 for a number of GM models. The TSB calls for the replacement of the AIR pump and the installation of a new secondary injection hose.

most ecu controlled vehicles have a 'limp home'mode if 2 or more fault codes are stored,it is designed to get your attention before damage is caused and to get you to the nearest w.shop to fix,i would have codes cleared and retest vehicle,it is the cheapest and 1st option for any shop,some late models even have excessive mileage past service interval in the 'limp' program
