Your problem is likely being caused by either a failing crank position sensor (on left 11o'clock on bellhousing)
or, an overheating fuel pump. Parts are expensive and not quick jobs to replace. I recommend you get a chilton or haynes manual and a digital multi meter and do the necessary testing before buying parts. Sometimes an ignition coil can also cause similar problems.

Yes it can be done as long as all the parts for 96 are used including the iring harness and computer and the exhaust system.

My son's '96 jeep grand cherokee's "problem" has

The computer is very easy to replace. Its located on the passenger side of the fire wall. I believe 4 screws hold it on. Unplug the connectors, remove the screws and thats it. Most junkyards will have your part for around 80 bucks. Hope this helps

Jeep won't start

Check voltage at coil. Check coil output (spark should be healthy even at 1/4" away from ground). If OK, then change module The only testing on module is with a special tool. Therefore if contacts are clean, that's all you can do with it!

The Module in the Drivers Door is notorius for this problem. I would start by changing that first. Good luck to you. Thanks for using fixya!

Jeep starts and runs for about five seconds then cuts off

obviously the dealer did not correctly complete the repair, therefore should be more involved in current problem. If your vehicle had any anti-theft device installed, be aware that many have delayed shut down features built in. I'd look there first, providing yo did not have any similar problem pryor to the theft.
Good luck!!

Sudden shut down

Hmm, this sounds like a electrical problem involving the ignition control module (computer) or the body control module.  They may not be bad but they are not getting power.  This could be due to one of many connection or relay problems.  Unless you know how to diagnose electrical problems yourself, you will need to get it to the shop.
