My 2003 foed f250 6.0 diesel has an intermittent starting issue. it turns over just fine but will not fire, fuel and air filter have been replaced recently. runs on regular diesel fuel. my scanner does not show any codes. this has only happend a few times so far.

Do you have compresion? that the first thing these diesels need is compression at least 360psi per cylinder is good but higher is also better to....i have seen alot of horror things with thses 6.0l oo gee

Doubtful you have a fuel pressure problem if the car runs well, poor starting can be a few things , poor air circulation air filter needs cleaning or replacing, poor injector flow warn injectors or just dirty fuel additive sometimes clears this , poor spark plugs not firing under pressure ok when started . for diesel cars you don't say what car it is , poor glow plugs . bad fuel filter , air leaks in fuel pump , poor injectors . and especially with diesel poor compression due to worn rings or head gasket failure . You may even have just have disturbed the engine earth strap when you replaced your starter motor .
That is a cold start...on petrol engine check the plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter and air cleaner.while on diesel engine check the glow plugs and injector pump.
First thing i would do is change the fuel filter. diesels need them changed more often then a gas engine. if that doesnt help it could be the injector pump\ fuel pump. pull a fuel line off somewhere at the engine ( at an injector ) have someone turn it over and make sure its getting fuel
As when front elevated, possible small leak on fuel pipe, check connections, air getting in fuel runs back to tank, so when starting, has to pull fuel back up before starting
poss the fuel filter has petrol in it,replace filter, turn engine over with fuel line unattached to clear lines then fire up,should be fine.you may hve a hot start problem for awhile but fill up with diesel at 1/2 tank to dilute any petrol left.in 32 years in the trade i have put petrol in so many diesel cars, and as long as it starts, keep it running, and start only when cold ish.
If the battery is strong and charged, starter is fine, car ran okay while getting progressively worse until it died and won't restart now, might be fuel filter or pump. I've dealt with two cars with fuel filter issues. Both would idle fine, but run progessively worse under load and eventually die and not start although everything else checked out. Engine turned fast enought to start, battery strong, alternator fine, air cleaner clean, all that. No start. Changed fuel filters and done. Everything back to normal. Both cars were about model year 1990 (1989 and 1991). Replaced one in a parking lot and car fired right back up and powered on home just fine, whereas the week leading up to it it ran worse and worse, hesitated on acceleration and finally would die if you hit the gas. Fuel filter may be in engine compartment. Looks like a canister with an in and an out for fuel. Pump is in gas tank and is way more work and money. Good luck, hope this helps.
Have your injection pump checked. If the diesel fuel feed going to the pistons is not highly atomized, there's no way that the diesel fuel gets to explode to keep your engine to run. However, also check the air filter system going to your engine. To get the diesel fuel to explode needs right air fuel ratio. Once these are checked, I'm sure you get your diesel car running.
CHECK ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP FUSE THAT SUPPLYS THE INJECTION PUMP FUEL.IF ALL IS GOOD.REPLACE FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER.MAKE SURE GLOW PLUGS AND GLOW PLUGS CONTROLLER IS WORKING. IF NOT. THAT WILL CAUSE NO STARTING PROBLEMS BIG TIME.
That sounds like it could be one of many things. Have you ever given the truck a tune up? I suggest the following things first.
New Air Filter New Spark Plugs New Plug Wires Oil Change (and filter)
These are the basic necessities of an engine. Having a dirty air filter, or plugs that are firing weak can surely cause this problem. Try giving the truck a good old tune up and see how it starts then.
not yet. temps are still in the high 60's.
not yet temps have been in the high 60's
Is it cold where you live?
