2009 Jeep Wrangler - 4WD shifter linkage (problem & solution)

Was shifting my 09 Wrangler into 4WD, decided to use 4WD Lo Saturday to pull something. When I pulled back on the shifter toward LO, it disengaged the shifter. Was left with vehicle stuck in 4WD (at lest it was high and not LO.) Took to dealer.

Turned out it was a 75 cent clip that had popped off. Per dealer's mechanic, will never happen again, they replaced with a revised part to correct this problem.

FYI, if you own 2008/2009 Jeep Wrangler, may want to get this correctred before it leaves you stranded somewhere.

I ordered this Wrangler last year, was delivered in September, 2009. One of the first 2009s off of the production line. And I selected the dealer here in DFW area because the sale guy, Keith, at Grubbs dealership, was only knowledgeable salesperson I met. He really knew the vehicle. I had other sales people at other dealers act surprised to know you could get full or half doors, soft or hard tops, etc. And so what did Chrysler-Jeep do? Closed the dealership.

They acually have an Rapid response for this. This should have been replaced before the car was even sold.

Testimonial: "Thanks. I was not made aware of the rapid response. That is good iformation for all to know. "

Shift my jeep in 4wd now the shifter is loose and it is staying in 4wd

Sounds like the rod from the 4WD shifter has come loose form the transfer case or from the shifter lever. Some use a cable. Look under the vehicle. A rod or cable will go from the shifter to the transfer case. If it is a cable and the ends appear attached the cable is broken inside the housing. Reattach ends of rod or replace cable .

My 4WD won't engage but I have vacuum to the axle disconnect vacuum motor, linkages feel solid when shifting and the 4WD light comes on in 4H and 4L on the dash like it should. I have a 93 Jeep Wrangler...

check the shift motor on the axle for holes. sometimes the rust through. i've fixed holes before with dura-glass body filler. if there are know holes, remove the shift motor to check and be sure the shift fork is not broken.

Stuck in 4 Wheel Drive Gear 1989 Jeep Wrangler was stuck in sand. Shifted to 4 wheel drive and now cannot switch back to AWD. Any suggestions?

Assume that is stuck in 4wd, cannot shift back to 2wd. Have you tried shifting to 4wd/Lo and back? Try letting out on the clutch while slowly rolling?

Assume you are manual transmission?

This sounds like the linkage could have fallen or broken off. Have someone move the 4wd shifter while you look under the vehicle.

89 wrangler do I need a new transfer case?

Sounds a lot like a linkage adjustment problem. Check transfer case linkage and adjust as necessary to get proper engagement. If you can't move lever on case, there may be an internal problem, but I've found that a good percentage of problems are with the linkage itself.
Check this out before getting too worried about unit. Also... make sure lube in case is in good condition and properly filled.
