The cargo door handle and lock unit of my Montero no longer functions. It will not respond to the lock/unlock mechanism. Now, it has a mushy feel when trying to depress the handle underneath and it will not engage to open at all. Door is stuck. Is there a way I can open the door from the inside? It seems that there should be a safe way to open the cargo door from the inside. Can I access the lock or handle from the interior? I really just want an alternative way to open the cargo area until it gets repaired. Thanks!

There's two screws by the handle, pull those out and you'll see how it all connects on the inside. I was able to remove my broken one, and drill a hole into the plastic where it broke and reuse it - it's lasted over 4 years now.

It could mean the rod connecting the handle to the latch has broken. You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. and you can access the innards of the door

And, in a curious way, a user in this forum could not find the accessory use the idea of keeping a folding table in place of "cover".
Good luck.
