Is a cold air in-take kit for a 05 Tacoma worth the expense?

There is way too much info to write to do R&R's. You need to purchase a manual because this gives you the specs also. The money for it is well worth it.

try a real toy forum, on tacoma (there classifieds, with WTB)
or use craigs list, and post a WTB.
big time hits the latter. try it.

drive it on over to oriellys auto parts and ask them to use thier scan tool (most parts stores can do this for you) itll tell you what part is causing the code to be thrown. however 9 times out of 10 when you have a check engine light on and the car still drives fine its the O2 sensor. on a side note most cold air intakes are a gimmick. most vehicles come stock with cold air intake from the factory. the issue ive noticed most with cold air intakes that use oil is they get over oilled and this cloggs up the IAC valve, TPS sensor, and throttle body.

i would chande the plugs at or around 60,000 to 70,000 miles. this is about the correct mileage. they may last longer but not worth the expensence of converter damage due to misfire and also gas mileage loss.

Give a dealer a call ask for the service department,Ask if the have a repair kit,also call your local parts stores ask them for parts and what special tools are required.Most of them are honest and will be happy to help.("Don't try to unhook any AC lines you could blind yourself if the freon gets into your eyes. if you have to pull the compressor.take it to a repair shop have them drain it for you first"). The power chips work fine but you have to think why did'nt the Toyata peaple do it first? The reason is the car might not be able to pass emission tests durability test fuel milaage test. The chips are designed to help retune the engine for other improvements like a cold air intake( more noise) open muffler or converter ( more noise and polution) more power has it's own problems. The whole drivetrain was designed to have this much power as you increase the power you alsoo need to improve the brakes tires shocks as a bigger more powerful truck has. Toyatas last a long time with very few problems. I you can afford troble and stey up the maintanice of all the systems, it can be fun, but may cost as much as getting a truck that has more power to begin with.
