Screwdriver works, which means the battery is good and the starter works. in between is the ignition switch. first you should check for 12V at the starter post w/ the smaller wire on it as the key is held in "start" position. if no, then you should probe the supply wire @ the ignition switch (Red wire) for constant 12V; if no, then there is a bad wire/fuse between the battery and the ignition switch. if it does then probe the ignition wire on the switch (Pink) w/ key in "on" position. if no voltage, then bad ignition switch. if yes, then probe the starter wire on the switch (Yellow) for 12V w/ key in "start" position. If no, then bad ignition switch. If yes, then check for wire break between ignition switch and starter

Well you need to see if you have voltage at the little wire on the starter solenoid when some is turning key if no voltage at the wire could be bad ignition switch and make sure the security light is not blinking or on it should go out when you put it in to run position if it is on this may be issue hope this helps

My 1991 gmc safari started but killed in the middle of driving and I can not get it started by turning the key but I can start it by using the old screw driver to the starter trick what is my problem.

neutral safety switch , burned fusable link wire or possibly the ignition switch down on the column is out of adjustment. If you have a tilt column try moving up and down all the way to see if it will start if it does your switch is not adjusted correctly or you may have a broken ignition rack inside the column. The ign. rack is what mechanically pushes the rod to activate the switch when you rotate the lock cylinder .. Check the small wire going to the starter for power when the key is in the start position. BE SURE THE CAR IS SAFELY ON STANDS.

I have a gmc Yukon denali. It wouldn't start and

Sometimes new starters have to be shimmed so that the gear on the starter lines up with the gear teeth on the flywheel on the motor. The grinding noise is the reason I say that is what's wrong. If there were shims already there, try taking them out. I hope this helps you

Why does my 1995 GMC safari van not turn over when I start it? It comes on, but it doesn't turn to start the car.

sound's like the starter motor packed it in! the starter site's on the drivers side of the oil pan right next to the tranny under the van, if u can remove it u can have i checked at a local napa or pepboys
