I have the same problem. I had brake switch replaced, it helped for a week. Now the mechanic is looking into a recall. If you hear anything let me know.

*Hard to Push:
-Check the vacuum line to the brake boost. Is it still connect to it?
-If Not. Plug it or connect to and now run the engine and try to brake you should fell smooth or softer than before. *Brake light warning light stay on: -Check Brake fluid level. If low top to line indicator "Full"
-The Emergency brake switch is not completely return or the release handle doesn't touch the switch. Or it's broken.
-You need to use hand to push the switch and if the light is off
then you need to adjust to closer.
If still no ON then replace the switch.
LOOK DOWN AT BRAKE PEDAL ARM TO SEE IF BRAKE SWITCH FELL OR LOOSE NEED ADJUSTING.IF ALL IS GOOD REPLACE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH.TO ADJUST BRAKE SWITCH.THE BRAKE SWITCH IN BRACKET THE BRAKE SWITCH PLUNGER SHOULD TOUCH BRAKE PEDAL ARM BEFORE BRAKE LIGHTS WILL TURN OFF.
The brake light switch is stuck open or is defective. Find it under the dash mounted on the brake lever, and make sure it is adjusted properly. If it is and the lights still stay on the switch needs replacing.
Try pulling back on the brake pedal if lights go off then either switch adjustment or the brake booster is allowing the pedal to drop down if it's running (vacuum) or brake pedal mechanism is binding.
Isn't that mysterious? It took me a few weeks to figure it out. Look carefully under the break pedal. There is this device called a "break light switch". I hope that helps.
