Either ask the rental service for the code or call a locksmith. for future referance, the code is located on the inside of the trunk. on one of the trunks henges.

I opened my 2008 lincoln town car trunk with key an now cannot get it to shut with key or buttons

Try spraying the mechanism with WD 40 and manually manipulate the lock. Make sure the latch has not somehow moved to a closed position even though the trunk is open. With the trunk open look at the locking mechanics and click your remote and see if anything is moving.

if theres no trunk release check the top of the rear seats for a button or tap to push or pull and the seats should fold down most cars that year had them but not 100% sure if yours does hope this helps

What would you do when your 1996 lincoln town car doors won't lock with the key. And the trunk won't open.

How can a lock not lock or unlock with a physical key? Maybe the cylinders are frozen? Try squirting a little oil into the locks.
1996 Town Cars have keys and keyless entry. The physical keys are two, an ignition key and a door key. You can't use the door key in the ignition, nor the ignition key in the door. They aren't interchangeable.
The default key code for keyless entry is posted on the right trunk hinge, inside the trunk.

1996 Lincoln Town Car trunk motor won't shut off

under the trunk lip (directly where the latch goes into the lock jaws; remove the carpet so that you can see the side of the trunk latch; on the latch jaws (bottom) is a switch that contacts the latch (top) this switch is broken or, mis-aligned it opens (stops the trunk motor) when the latch contacts it.
