2004 Chevy Impala no heat from defrost or heater

My 2004 Chevy Impala is blowing cold air through defrost or the heater. My coolant level is low however (overflow bottle is empty). Could this be the problem (coolant level being low) as to why there is no heat or is it a heater core issue. Thanks for your time and consideration. Doug

Thanks for your input. Filled the cooling system back to normal operating levels. I am now getting heat again however, I am only getting warm air from the passenger's side. Still blowing cold on the driver's side. I'm suspecting some sort of control but, wanted to get some input from you all to see what to look for. Again THANK you so much for your time and consideration. Doug

No heat is often a symptom of low coolant, usually followed by overheat. There are other controls that regulate heater, but right now, re-fill the cooling system with engine running and heater on high, then check for leaks (coolant you lost went somewhere...you need to determine where) Low coolant will damage your engine. Take care of that first, then if heater still does not work, then do diagnosis on that. (if you loose the engine heat won't matter, will it!)

There are doors inside the heater box that open and close to change direction and amount of heat. The doors are moved by small vacuum "motors" that take commands from the heater control. Possibly, you have a problem with one of them. Unfortunately they are mostly difficult or near impossible to get to. You may want to get a manual to do diagnosis and find repair instructions. I couldn't possibly write it all out here. One other note. don't forget that the coolant you lost had to go somewhere and if that is not corrected, you can and will have a problem with it. Usually it will pick a day with the worst weather when you have the least amount of time (just seems to work that way)

Yes.....you DO want to correct the coolant level in the cooling system before engine damage is done.
DO NOT take the coolant pressure cap off unless the engine is cold.
Remove cap and start engine.....fill to proper level with a 50% antifreeze (long life antifreeze..... usually red ) and 50% water mix.
Once the coolant system has been refilled you should have heat from the heater again.
When filling stay with it until proper operating temperature is reached.
Once the thermostat opens at the correct operating temperature the system may require more coolant to properly fill it.

Why is the system low?
While filling and once filled ......look under the car for leaks.

You probably have a blown head gasket. With the engine cold, take off the radiator cap, make sure the radiator is full, and start the engine. If you have air bubbles rising in the radiator, especially when you open the throttle, you have a blown head gasket.

2000 Chevy Impala. Why does it blow hot and cold air?

If the coolant level is low in the engine it can cause heat fluctuations from the heater, as well as an incorrect reading on the gauge. Make sure the coolant level is correct in the engine.

I have a 2007 Saturn, Aura. Heater does not blow hot, slow coolant leak, & it also over heats. Please help! I'm freezing when I'm in my car!!!

You need to fix the coolant leak, then refill and bleed cooling system, then you will get heat and cure overheating problem too

My 2004 Chevy Impala only blows cold air with heat on. The heater would only keep it a little warm the other day but now only seems to be blowing cold air.

Check in the main radiator with the motor cool that the coolant is full as if the coolant is low there will be no heat in the heater. If it is low you need to check for leaks or head gasket problems. If its full check that the temp guage is coming up to its normal position as the thermostat could be faulty. Then make sure that the heater tap is operating corectly.

Heater does not warm up. it blows out cold air

I would inspect the car for coolant leaks. If there are any they need to be repaired. Check coolan level in radiator, if full than follow this procedure. Change radiator thermostat. Drain old coolant. Remove heater core hose. Take a garden hose and run water through the heater core for 3-4 minutes or until clear. Retighten Hose. Fill radiator with premix coolant. Star car and let run with defroster on and heat on full blast. Let run for 20-30 minutes and wait till radiator fan to come on. Add coolant as the level drops in the radiator. Also open coolant bleeder screws to purge out air.

Heater blows cold air when i turn it on blows a little warm air then it is cold

It sounds like you may be leaking coolant and are low on coolant. Low or no heat is a sign of the coolant being low. Vehicle can leak coolant from multiple locations. Top off the coolant level and see if the heat returns or gets better and get back to me.

Other causes could be a clogged heater core, Temperature door motor/door not moving, cylinder head gaskets, engine block, thermostat.

Car trouble

Seems like you have a stuck thermostat. The lack of heat is from the lack of the thermostat opening preventing flow to the heater core.

Would the heater control valve malfunctioning make the engine overheat blowing hot air out the heater one moment, then not blowing the hot air, temp gage spikes 225 plus. The motor takes awhile to heat up...

Heater control valve malfunction will not cause engine to overheat unless coolant is leaking externally...Overheating going down the road can be the result of a few different things...Partly clogged radiator...Insufficient air flow due to possible fan problem...External coolant leak...Make sure fans are operting properly and have cooling system pressure tested for leaks...Gaining and losing heat on the inside of the vehicle usually means system is low on coolant but you must find out where coolant is going

My heater only blows hot air when the car is moving and cool air when I sit at idle. Also the inside window fog up if I try to use the defroster mode 1st thing.

Hi:
Your heating system is dependent on hot coolant to be circulated through your heater core, which a fan blows across, and you get heat. If you only get heat when you are moving, that means that either your engine is low on coolant, or the engine's water pump is not working well. Check your coolant level when your engine is cold.

Over heating

sounds like an air pocket or waterpump may be on way out.
