Freeze plugs, also known as expansion plugs or engine block heaters, are designed to expand and contract along with the engine block as it heats up and cools down. They are located in the engine block and are used to prevent the engine block from cracking due to the expansion and contraction of the metal.
In a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0L engine, the freeze plugs are located in the following locations:

  • Two freeze plugs are located on the back side of the engine block, near the top.
  • Two freeze plugs are located on the bottom side of the engine block, near the front.
  • Two freeze plugs are located on the passenger side of the engine block, near the bottom.
Here is a diagram showing the locations of the freeze plugs in a 6.0L engine:

i GUESS OP, ASKED DERPS ON THE INTERNET WHERE IS MY LEAK AND THE ONLY ANSWER WAS THE MOST COSTLY LABOR INTENSIVE FIX, PULL ENGINE AND REPLACE ALL CORE PLUGS
    I SAY BAH!

WRONG ENGINE THEIRS IS LY6, 2008 BLOCK (RPO LY6 VIN K)
2 ON HEADS FRONT AND REAR TOP.

    INTAKE HAS 32MM CORE PLUGS

BUT WHY NO DO THE PRESSURE TEST FIRST,LIKE DOWN TEST AND LET THE TRUTH DICTATE ACTIONS NOW WILD GUESSIING WRONG THE ENGINE CORES BLOWN,.
use a RAD LEAK DOWN TESTER, TO FIND IT, COOL ENGINE, KEY OFF
LOOK FOR BAD BLOCK HEATER LEAKING TOO, AND OPTIONS. THAT SCREWS IN.

IF DANGEROUS IS FUN AND NO $150 FOR THE TOOL

JUST GET THE ENGINE FULLY HOT WITH A NEW RAD CAP FIRST
THEN SEE ALL THINGS LEAKING, AT 14PSI UNDER CAP , NATURAL PRESSSURE.
SEE IT EVEN SQUIRT TO PLACES THAT DO NOT LEAK. EVEN 3 FOOT, AND DRIVING AIR FLOWS PUSH IT ALL OVER
SO WE DO THIS PARKED AND CLEANED FIRST, OF LEAKS UKNOWN
THEN SEE REALITY IN THE DRIVE DRIVE WAY HOOD UP.
ALL HOSES, ENGINE 6 SIDES, INTAKE MAN CORES AND ALL GASKET EVEN THE HEAD GASKET
AND CORE HEATER LEAKING TO FOOT WELLS

LOTS OF PLACES FOR IT TO LEAK, THE MOST DERPS CAN GUESS.

PUT A DYE KIT IN COOLANT AND USE $15 UV LAMP TO FIND THE LEAK, CAN HELP.
SAME IS TRUE FOR OIL LEAKS
    AND A/C FREON LEAKS.
    THE DYE, SHOWS THE SPOT THAT LEAKS MORE EASY;
