Your engine has a cam timing belt. Check to see if that's broken or when it was last replaced. If broken, it will need to be replaced and the cams retimed to the crank shaft if possible. Your engine is an interference engine meaning the valves can hit the pistons if out of timing and this often happens with a broken cam belt, which means the engine may need replacing.

Nissan pulsar '88. replaced starter motor, then

Is it a manual, or an automatic? Earlier Nissans sometimes have a problem with the neutral safety switch (a device that keeps the engine from rolling over in gear or without the clutch depressed.) Generally, if their bad, they need to be a little warm before they'll start, like setting in the sunlight for a few hours.

Good Luck!

1988 Nissan Pulsar will not engage clutch. Engine

You need to replace the clutch and pressure plate --your clutch is worn out. Plus other parts like throw-out bearing ,pilot bearing and may even need the flywheel machined flat.
You need to take it to a shop or if you are mechanicaly minded could do it your yourself,

Nothing on the dash board works

Have a look at the main wire that comes from the battery, sometimes they run from the battery to a conector that corodes and then you loose all the power to the fuse box, that same bad conection can cause the alternator not to charge the battery and than you replace the alternator not fixing the route cause
