About two weeks ago while accelerating from a stop ,my Passat EPC light came on then went into limp mode. The vehicle would not accelerate. I pulled off road, shifted to park and turned off engine. On restart the engine would start and immediately die. It did this about five times. After setting for a minute, at restart the EPC light went off and ran normally. There has been no sign of issue for about two weeks.
Today while pulling from stop sign the car went into limp mode with no light. I shut engine off and on restart it would start and die. After waiting a minute, it started normally.Though no warning lights, I checked engine codes.I had one code, P228C00 Fuel Pressure Regulator 'A' Exceeded Control limits - Pressure Too Low
At the moment, the engine is running fine. This is clearly an electronics issue.
Any one seen this before? Where should I start troubleshooting?
It’s died several more times without EPC or check engine light. Usually after start up and on initial acceleration. Codes for low fuel rail pressure. I have decided that it is most likely the high pressure fuel pump. Replacement is on the way.
Replaced HPFP, car was perfect for two days, problem reoccurred, more frequently. I have ordered fuel pressure sensor. If not that, it was to be the ECU right?
Replaced fuel pressure sensor, car ran fine for two days, issue occurred again. Car died when stopping at end of driveway after initial startup. Restarted, died about 75 yards after, would not restart until ignition turned off, then it restarted and ran fine.
Giving code P228C00 Fuel Pressure Regulatory “A”…..too low
Help!
Re: 2015 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI dying or limp mode
P228C, it has applied exclusively to diesel powered vehicles. It has also meant that the powertrain control module (PCM) had detected a low voltage signal from the control circuit of the electronic fuel pressure regulator, which reflected insufficient fuel pressure.

I wnet out of gas on my VW Beetle 2001 last saturday. When I added gas to the tank, the car wouldn't start and the EPC light went on and I haven't been able to get it to start ever since. Would the EPC light have anything to do with the gas pump or anything related to running out of gas?
i have a 2002 passat TDI and won`t start, i have changed the fuel filter and nothing, all the light is on , no error , the problem is in the last few weeks i have used some **** diesel ``green diesel`` exactly, what i heard it is not recommanded, any suggestion pls?
the belt slips, and the engine goes into limp mode, and the epc light will come on- to protect itslef until its fixed. Once its fixed...you may have to decode her up to 9 times to get it to start...I did. Ive done 5 timing belt changes on these blasted cars and every time it slips a tooth and the engine cuts itself off with epc, i have to decode it at least 8 times. good luck. and to the idiot who said gas cap..get a life .
EPC refers to the drive by wire system. This system, generally speaking, encompasses the throttle pedal and its position sensors (it needs to know where your gassin' foot is) and the throttle body.
Most likely, the EPC light and its associated faults for this scenario are a symptom, not the problem. Meaning the actual root cause is causing the no-start/no crank issue AND fault codes related to the EPC system.
And the most likely root cause is an ignition switch, NOT the engine speed sensor.
With a bad engine speed sensor, the car will still crank all damn day (or until the battery dies) but the car won't start.
If you get a no-crank issue, and then it eventually starts either with or without an EPC light, again, the most likely problem is the ignition switch. Not the starter, not the battery (though the battery proper and the cable connections must be perfection itself to rule them out.) You can get these issues with a visually perfect but still faulty battery connection.
The EPC light is the Electronic pedal
control. The mass air meter, brake switch, the throttle body, the gas
pedal, wiring, and the computer all are tied to the EPC light. If you
had a EPC or the engine light on then there is a fault. This can cause
the computer to enter a limp mode or the improper signal is sent from
the accelerator which manifests itself as poor performance. There have
been some recalls on this so I would visit your local VW dealer.
I have the same make and model. Overall a really nice car. I was driving down the freeway yesterday when the car jolted and I lost the gear lighting on my dash. The car drove in 'limp' mode the remainder of the way home. I started it up this morning and it ran fine for about 15 minutes then it went back to 'limp' mode and the dashboard gear indicatior lights went out again. Research indicates this is the Transmission control module which is located under the passanger side floorboard. In my case there is moisture in this area
